Texas (KBTX) – Getting ready for the holidays in July may sound early, but entertaining expert Jennifer Satterfield says a little planning now can make the busiest season feel far more manageable
Satterfield demonstrated a simple Christmas tablescape that begins with one key decision: the plates. She recommends “layering” by mixing and matching patterns — pairing a main dinner plate with a second plate featuring a seasonal design. If bold patterns feel like too much, she suggested swapping in a neutral plate to simplify the look
From there, she builds the design by pulling colors from the plates into linens and accessories. To balance busy patterns, Satterfield suggested using a neutral linen, then adding texture and a subtle sparkle to evoke holiday lights. She encouraged “high-low” styling, mixing special pieces with affordable options, like faux leather or colored placemats that add warmth and help accent colors pop
Napkins are an easy final detail, she said — whether tied in a simple knot, paired with a napkin ring, or chosen for sentimental value. Embroidered or heirloom linens can become conversation starters at the table
For holiday planning, Satterfield’s <a href="https://healthylife7.com/florida-reports-first-2026-death-from-a-flesh/” title=”Florida reports first 2026 death from a 'flesh”>first tool is a notepad. She advises creating categories and taking inventory now: décor that may need refreshing or donating, servingware and dishes for hosting, and a plan for guest lists and recipes
She also recommends pre-booking items that fill up quickly, such as family photography sessions, hair and nail appointments, and ordering personalized or handmade gifts well ahead of time
Her biggest advice for hosts: don’t wait until the week of the holiday to plan meals, confirm guests and gather supplies
