Lauren Whiting: Advocating for Exercise as a Standard Part of Cancer Care at Inaugural ISEO Conference
Lauren Whiting, Chief Executive Officer at Lift Cancer Care Services, shared on LinkedIn:
“Imagine the world we could create, International Society of Exercise Oncology President Kathryn Schmitz posed to the room today at the inaugural ISEO Conference
‘A world where every person with cancer can access exercise as a standard part of their care, where it is embedded into every cancer pathway and where it is recognised, globally, as standard oncology care.’
Delegates from six continents came together, and for many of us, this was the first time a program has been dedicated entirely to exercise oncology, and you could feel what that meant to everyone there
Today was all about cementing a shared vision, and recognising that getting there will take real systems change; something we can only achieve together
As one speaker put it, ‘we will not be measured by how many papers we publish, but by how many patients’ lives we can truly change.’
Highlights of today included discussing the ‘secret insights’ from the CHALLENGE trial with lead author Kerry Courneya, sharing the Lift Cancer Care Services story with birthday boy Jay Harness and chatting with Robert Newton AM about the predictable and preventable harms exercise can help manage in men with prostate cancer
There were no arguments here today – exercise is medicine, and it urgently needs to be accessible to the people who need it now
This is where the opportunity exists, and it’s exciting to be part of the community committed to making this a reality.”
