We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym Durham celebrated its opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday.

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) –A popular children’s gym designed for kids of all abilities is now open in Durham, offering families a place to play, connect and access re

We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym Durham celebrated its opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday and officially welcomed families Saturday. The new facility aims to be more than just an indoor playground. It’s designed as an inclusive community space where children of all abilities can learn, grow and feel accepted

For parent Amanda Walter, the gym fills an important need

“We’re always looking for local areas to spend time in and move our bodies,” Walter said. “It’s got a lot of great opportunity.”

Her daughter, Ivy, was among the children exploring the gym’s sensory-friendly equipment and play areas during opening week

The Durham location along Hillsborough Road is part of the national We Rock the Spectrum franchise, which focuses on creating inclusive environments for children, including those with autism, sensory processing disorders and other developmental differences

Project Manager Tina Norwood said the mission extends far beyond play

“People need to be seen, and it needs to start at an early age,” Norwood said. “We’re able to give that safe haven for children and their families to come and be seen and heard and grow with us because the world is hard enough.”

The facility <a href="https://healthylife7.com/3-apple-watch-running-features-i-wish-id-known-about-sooner/” title=”3 Apple Watch Running Features I Wish I'd Known About Sooner”>features specialized equipment designed to support sensory development, motor skills and social interaction while giving families a welcoming space to gather

Owner Ritz Murphy said the idea grew from years of working directly with children and families in the special needs community

As a behavior technician, Murphy frequently heard parents express frustration about traveling outside Durham to access critical therapies and services

“Parents were complaining about commuting to other towns for services like physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and ABA,” Murphy said. “We’re going to have all the support they need.”

Murphy hopes the gym will become a one-stop destination where families can access sensory-based play groups, occupational therapy, speech therapy and other specialized programming in a single location

A dedicated turf area in the back of the facility will serve as a sensory-focused space where therapists can work with children and track growth over time

“There are going to be sensory-based play groups, occupational therapy and speech therapy,” Murphy said. “We’ve built a whole turf grass area in the back that’s going to be a sensory area where therapists will be able to collect data and see the progress of the kids as they develop.”

While the equipment and services are significant draws, Murphy said the gym’s most important offering may be something less tangible: community

“I’m trying to create a big family,” Murphy said. “I want people to know there is support. I’m here to listen. I’m here to help. I want families to understand that they’re not alone.”

As Durham continues to grow, We Rock the Spectrum hopes to become a destination where children can play freely, parents can find support and families can feel a true sense of belonging

For many families, the gym represents easier access to inclusive recreation, developmental re
