The ₹1,583 crore acquisition of a majority stake in Wellbeing Nutrition by USV Pharma has given the nutrition startup more than just fresh ownership. It marks the beginning of the next phase of growth, with the company now setting its sights on becoming a ₹1,000 crore brand over the next three to four years while expanding internationally

In February this year, USV Pharma acquired a 79% stake in Wellbeing Nutrition in one of the largest deals in India’s direct-to-consumer wellness space. The transaction also marked the exit of early investors Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) and Fireside Ventures, both of which sold their 19.8% stake. HUL has since doubled down on its nutrition portfolio by acquiring the remaining 49% stake in Oziva for ₹824 crores, making it a wholly owned subsidiary

For Wellbeing Nutrition’s founders Avnish Chhabria and Saurabh Kapoor, the rationale behind choosing USV went beyond capital

“We were looking at a shareholder which understood what we did. Coming from such an experience in pharma, they understood ingredients, regulations and what makes a quality product. As founders, you want to find the right home for the brand that can continue building it over the next few decades,” co-founder Kapoor told Fortune India

Kapoor said the company continues to operate independently while benefiting from USV’s expertise in scaling businesses, strengthening retail presence and accelerating overseas expansion

“It gives us confidence that someone has believed in what we wanted to build. They have already seen businesses scale, so they can help us avoid mistakes while supporting our expansion in India and internationally,” he said

Founded in 2019, Wellbeing Nutrition operates across sports nutrition, <a href="https://healthylife7.com/scientists-say-this-daily-habit-could-influence-how-fast-you-age/” title=”Scientists Say This Daily Habit Could Influence How Fast You Age”>daily essentials and beauty, and recently entered the kids nutrition segment. It plans to launch products in the gut health category next, completing what Kapoor describes as a portfolio catering to consumers across different age groups

The company closed last fiscal with revenue of about ₹250 crore to ₹300 crore and is targeting ₹400 crore to ₹500 crore this year, growing at 80% to 100% annually. Around 70% of its business comes from online channels while retail contributes the remaining 30%. It is present across about 5,000 retail outlets and has recently entered the UK, US and UAE markets, with the UAE currently leading its international business

Quick commerce and international expansion to drive the next phase

As the business scales, Kapoor expects quick commerce and exports to become two of the biggest growth engines. Quick commerce already accounts for 30% to 40% of the company’s marketplace business, a share he expects could rise to 50% to 60% over the next two years

“Quick commerce has become more of a convenience channel than a discovery platform. Consumers usually learn about the brand elsewhere, but repeat purchases increasingly happen through quick commerce because of instant delivery,” Kapoor said

The company now sees a near 55:45 split between tier I and tier II markets, driven by rising awareness around protein, preventive healthcare and overall wellness. To deepen its presence, Wellbeing Nutrition is investing in on ground activations, product sampling and events across smaller cities. But rather than segmenting by geography, Kapoor described the company’s consumer base as “India 1” and “India 2”, arguing that health conscious consumers with similar aspirations now exist across cities, from metros to Indore, Lucknow and Surat.

International markets, although still at an early stage, are expected to contribute meaningfully over the next few years. Kapoor estimates overseas markets could account for 20% to 30% of overall revenue in three to four years as acceptance of the company’s products grows

The company’s strategy remains centred on premium positioning instead of aggressive discounting

“We’ve stayed true to two philosophies. One, we launch products only if they genuinely make a difference. Second, we stay heavily backed by science and technology. We have never built the brand around deep discounting because health is not something consumers want to compromise on,” Kapoor said
