The company that operates a warehouse damaged in a massive fire in Boyle Heights last month has been cited for a public health violation, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

BOYLE HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) –The company that operates a warehouse damaged in a massive fire in Boyle Heights last month has been cited for a public health violation, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health

The department said it will fine Lineage $500 per day until the violations are corrected

A public health inspection report issued last week stated that “abatement for the violations must be completed at once” and cited complaints of increased fly activity and decaying organic waste

According to county officials, fines will begin after a reinspection conducted last week found continued unsanitary and nuisance conditions at the site

Los Angeles County Public Health officials said Lineage must remove all fire-damaged food in accordance with laws and regulations and eliminate all potential fly-breeding

Residents and workers in the area surrounding the warehouse said a recent heat wave has worsened odors and fly infestations linked to the site

The citation from Public Health follows enforcement actions by the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Last week, 7 On Your Side Investigates reported that AQMD regulators had also cited Lineage in connection with conditions at the warehouse

At last check, AQMD had issued 13 violations to Lineage

Lineage issued the following statement regarding the new violation from the Department of Public Health”

“We are working around the clock on odor control, pest control and the removal of food waste, and we will not stop until the site is clean and the community can move forward. Cleaning up a site with this much food waste is an enormous undertaking, and we understand why regulators are watching closely – we would expect nothing less. As more waste is removed and our cleanup efforts progress, we expect conditions to continue to improve. The citations reflect the reality of what we’re dealing with, not a lack of urgency or commitment on our part. In the full interest of transparency, we are sharing our response to public health officials, which was submitted earlier this week. We are moving as fast and safely as we can and doing everything we can for this community until the cleanup is finished.”
