Summer is in full swing and the NHL players are up in the gym working on their fitness. NHL.com is their witness. We asked players from around the League to weigh in on their workout routines, so grab a bench and check out how the players grind it out during the offseason
This week, for rep No. 4, Minnesota Wild forward Nico Sturm shares his offseason routine:
1. What is your offseason workout routine?
- Morning: Pilates (before 7 a.m.), foam roll, activation, lift, skate OR condition
- Afternoon — physical therapy
Tuesday: Foam roll, activation, lift, skate OR condition
Wednesday:
- Foam roll, activation, lift, skate OR condition
- Afternoon — physical therapy
Thursday: Foam roll, activation, lift, skate OR condition
Friday: Pilates (before 7 a.m.), foam roll, activation, lift, skate OR condition
Weekend: Saturday — 45-minute outside steady state conditioning run
*Everyday (Mon.-Sat.): 15-minute stretching routine
2. Favorite song to work out to?
“Shake That” by Eminem featuring Nate Dogg (currently, at least)
3. Do you prefer…?
Cardio or lifting: Lifting
Leg day or arm day: Arm day
Running or biking: Running
Pool or hot tub: Pool
4. What is your favorite exercise?
Standing kettle bell overhead press
5. What exercise do you dread?
Any form of exercise where there is weight on my shoulders
6. What is your go-to post-workout meal?
Chicken, avocado, cottage cheese, honey, any form of carb
7. Who is your favorite workout buddy?
My buddy Simon, who is a strength and conditioning coach that I work out together with on vacation
Fun Fact: Nico started writing his own strength programs when he was 18!
