Va. (WHSV) – The nutritional services supervisor for Page County Public Schools has received national recognition and says she is using what she learned from her experience to improve meal programs for students across the district
Kate Campbell recently received the Franco Harris Legacy Scholarship through Super Bakery. The scholarship allowed her to attend the National Nutrition Conference, where she was inducted into the scholarship society and learned ways to improve school meal programs
“I’m very humbled to be a part of that group of people who are school nutrition professionals that are interested in providing more opportunities to our students,” Campbell said
One of Campbell’s biggest takeaways from the conference was finding ways to make school meals more inclusive
“We want everybody to eat with us. It doesn’t matter who you are, your background, anything like that,” she said. “Everyone is afforded that same opportunity. We want everyone to be excited and not feel any stigma towards that.”
Campbell said serving meals goes beyond breakfast and lunch
“The biggest balance there is to provide them with nutritious food that will fuel their bodies, but also food that they want to have that looks good and they’re interested in eating,” she said
Campbell said she is also continuing to emphasize locallyo ensure food safety and quality
“It’s also really cool to be able to spread the wealth,” she said. “We’re keeping the money that we’re spending in our own community and being able to regenerate the funds over and over is, I think, a great thing.”
