She found places around $1,500 a month total — meaning about $750 each — but he rejected them as too small and lacking the amenities he wants (think gym, pool, concierge). Instead, he pitched a luxury downtown building for $3,800 a month. Split 50/50, her portion would be $1,900 — which she says is more than half her monthly take-home pay. In other words, it’s not just about rent. It’s about what “equality” is being made to mean. In a healthy relationship, equality isn’t identical inputs — it’s mutual care, mutual respect, and decisions that don’t require one partner to sacrifice their stability so the other can have marble countertops and a pool. If he truly wanted 50/50, the simplest solution would be living at the lower earner’s budget. If he wants luxury, the equitable solution is paying more for the upgrade he’s requesting.
