Chronic diseases affect nearly 3 in 4 adults in the United States, and more than half of adults live with two or more chronic conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among adults age 65 and older, that number goes up to more than 90% living with at least one chronic condition
Many chronic diseases, including heart disease and certain cancers, share common risk factors that can often be addressed through healthy <a href="https://healthylife7.com/why-lifestyle-company-is-the-wrong-label-for-most-junior-explorers/” title=”Why “Lifestyle Company” Is the Wrong Label for Most Junior Explorers”>lifestyle choices and regular preventive care. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for approximately 1 in 5 deaths (22%).
During Chronic Disease Month, Blue Shield of California is highlighting the importance of prevention, early detection, and ongoing care to help members live healthier lives and lower their risk of serious illness
Dr. Scott Flinn, Blue Shield of California
“Chronic diseases often develop slowly and may not show symptoms until complications arise,” said Dr. Scott Flinn, regional medical director at Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan. “Regular screenings and preventive care help identify potential concerns early, giving members and their providers the opportunity to address them before they become more serious, and improve long-term health outcomes.”
Dr. Flinn encourages people to take charge of their health with the below:
- Quit vaping or smoking to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and chronic lung disease.
- Eat a healthy, balanced diet to support overall wellness and lower the risk of conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.
- Maintain a healthy weight to help prevent obesity-related illnesses, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
- Get regular physical activity to improve heart health and reduce the risk of chronic disease.
- Limit alcohol consumption to reduce the risk of liver disease, certain cancers, and other health complications.
- Stay current on preventive screenings, including blood pressure and cholesterol checks, to identify health risks early.
“Prevention is one of the most powerful tools we have to combat chronic disease,” said Dr. Flinn. “When healthy habits are combined with regular screenings and follow-up care, individuals are better equipped to catch potential issues early, manage their health proactively, and improve their long-term well-being.”
