Weight-loss medications such as GLP-1s are changing the way obesity is treated, offering new hope for people who have struggled to lose weight through traditional methods
But while these medications can be highly effective, the latest Women Out Loud podcast reminds listeners they are not a shortcut to better health
Hosted by Surf Coast Women’s Health Group, the episode brings together GP Dr Niamh Logue, dietitian Kate Van Berkel, physiotherapist Courtney Weybury and practice manager Amy McElgunn to discuss how people can get the best results from GLP-1 medications while protecting their long-term health
Van Berkel said there was much more to the conversation than simply prescribing medication
“For those that have made that informed decision with their GP or their endocrinologist, what care do they need to thrive with these medications and to have the benefit they need while minimising the risk?,” she said
While GLP-1 medications help regulate appetite and support weight loss, they work best alongside healthy eating, regular physical activity and ongoing medical care
One of the biggest concerns discussed in the podcast is muscle loss

While people often focus on the number on the scales, losing muscle as well as body fat can affect strength, mobility and long-term health
Weybury said resistance training was an important part of maintaining muscle and could be adapted to suit almost anyone
“You don’t have to go to a gym. You can do lots of strength stuff at home or at a park,” she said
“The main thing is that with strength you’re using resistance, using weight, to help stimulate the muscles and develop strength.”
Van Berkel encouraged people to shift their focus away from weight alone
“That idea of determining your health on seeing the scales drop: what have you cost yourself?” she said
“Let’s focus on how many squats you can do, or how much you could lift or how quickly you could walk that distance.”
Dr Logue said it was important to understand that not all weight loss is fat loss
“The weight loss that comes from GLP-1s is a combination of water, muscle and fat,” she said. “Really what we should be focusing on is fat loss.”
The discussion also highlighted the importance of adequate protein intake, fibre, hydration and regular follow-up while taking GLP-1 medications
Together, these strategies can help preserve muscle, support nutrition and improve long-term outcomes
As a multidisciplinary clinic, the Surf Coast Women’s Health Group supports patients throughout their weight management journey
The team works together to provide medical assessment, nutritional guidance, exercise advice and ongoing support, helping people develop sustainable habits alongside medication rather than relying on medication alone
The podcast’s message is clear
GLP-1 medications can be a valuable tool for eligible patients, but lasting success comes from combining them with personalised healthcare, good nutrition, strength training, and realistic lifestyle changes that support health well beyond the scales
