University of Houston Launches Health Initiative to Connect Research and Education
Published July 30, 2026 by Hailea Schultz
The University of Houston (UH) has launched a new initiative that aims to grow the region’s healthcare talent pipeline, strengthen research collaboration and expand access to care across Texas.
UH Health brings together programs in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, optometry, psychology, social work and population health, along with the Humana Integrated Health Systems Science Institute, under one coordinated structure. By connecting expertise across the university, the initiative could better position UH as a top-tier research institution and compete for grants.
“Now, with the launch of UH Health, we are bringing together the full strength of our health enterprise to expand our reach, advance research and transform the future of health for our communities,” said UH President Renu Khator in a press release
Preparing Texas’ Healthcare Workforce
The initiative comes as Texas’ fast-growing and aging population places greater demand on an already strained healthcare workforce.
UH Health aims to help meet that demand by expanding the talent pipeline and breaking down traditional academic silos. Students will have more opportunities to learn alongside peers in other health disciplines, reflecting the team-based care delivered in hospitals, clinics and other real-world settings.

UH’s proximity to the Texas Medical Center further supports that approach. Through partnerships with HCA Healthcare, Memorial Hermann, Baylor College of Medicine, MD Anderson Cancer Center and other institutions, students can gain hands-on clinical experience and exposure to a variety of health professions.
Advancing Research
UH Health is also designed to connect researchers across disciplines who are working on related health challenges. Brain health is one example: more than 100 faculty members across 12 of UH’s 16 colleges are studying prevention, early detection, treatment and caregiver support.

By bringing those efforts under one coordinated structure, the initiative could make it easier for researchers to share expertise, find connections across their work and collaborate on new discoveries.
UH is also expanding its research capacity. The university recentlyreceivedan $18.8 million National Institutes of Health grant to lead a five-year initiative focused on the root causes of chronic disease and is investing $77 million in a new 55,000-square-foot medical research building.
Expanding Access to Care
UH Health also includes the Family Care Center, which provides affordable primary care and mental health services to Third Ward, East End and South Houston communities. UH Health is also expanding health education, workforce development and research in the Rio Grande Valley through its partnership with DHR Health.
