European Children’s Fitness Declines: Study Reveals Alarming Trends

A recent investigation reveals that young people across Europe fall short of recommended physical fitness benchmarks in strength, flexibility, and body composition. Researchers from the University of Zaragoza documented a downward trajectory in pediatric health-related fitness from 1990 through today

    Key fitness components in decline

The analysis, appearing in the journal Sports Medicine – Open, examined data from 417,362 individuals aged 6 to 16 across 20 European nations, covering the period from 1965 to 2023. The authors tracked changes in muscular strength, flexibility, body composition, and cardiorespiratory fitness—factors they describe as essential for both immediate and long-term health in this demographic. They warned that this constitutes a significant lost opportunity that may prove hard to reverse

Upper-body strength has trended downward since the 1970s, with a temporary plateau between 1980 and 2000 before another drop. Lower-body strength, assessedteadily ever since. The team also identified a steady, linear worsening in body composition, marked by rising body fat—a change frequently masked when relying solely on body mass index (BMI)

    Flexibility shows steepest drop

Flexibility exhibited the most alarming pattern, with a continuous decline that has accelerated since the year 2000. For cardiorespiratory fitness—the capacity of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels to supply oxygen to muscles during prolonged exertion—recent figures hint at a possible stabilization between 2015 and 2023 after years of decline. Still, the authors caution that current levels remain inferior to those seen in earlier decades

The researchers underscored the urgency of boosting physical activity promotion through public institutions, noting that fitness serves as a vital marker of health during childhood and adolescence. Better cardiorespiratory endurance and healthier body composition in youth correlate with improved cardiovascular outcomes and lower mortality risk later in life, while muscular strength in these years links to more favorable body composition

    WHO guidelines and current shortfalls

The World Health Organization advises that children and adolescents get at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day, including muscle- and bone-strengthening exercises at least three times weekly. Nevertheless, more than 75% of European adolescents fail to meet these standards. Globally, the WHO attributes roughly 6% of coronary heart disease burden, 7% of type 2 diabetes cases, 10% of breast cancer cases, and 10% of colon cancer cases to physical inactivity. Additionally, inactivity accounts for 9.0% of premature deaths, 7.2% of all-cause mortality, and 7.6% of cardiovascular disease deaths.
