Vibrio vulnificus Cases Rise Across Florida

Vibrio vulnificus cases are rising across Florida, with 12 infections and one death reported during the 2026 summer season

The latest infection was recorded in Bay County, adding to cases reported across several areas of the state. Florida recorded 33 cases and five associated deaths during 2025

Cases typically become more likely during the summer, when warmer coastal waters favor bacterial growth and participation in swimming, boating, fishing, and shellfish consumption increases. Although infection remains uncommon, severe illness can progress within hours and may become fatal within one or two days

    How V. vulnificus Infection Occurs

    V. vulnificus occurs naturally in saltwater and brackish water, where seawater and fresh water mix. Infection can develop when an open cut, scrape, or other wound is exposed to contaminated water

The bacterium may also be acquired through the consumption of raw or undercooked shellfish, particularly oysters. Exposure does not result in severe illness for most <a href="https://healthylife7.com/the-15-hottest-health-and-wellness-franchises-of-2026/” title=”The 15 Hottest Health and Wellness Franchises of 2026″>healthy individuals, but clinical vigilance is important because invasive infections can deteriorate rapidly

People who are immunocompromised or have open wounds should avoid entering waters where infections have been reported

    V. vulnificus Symptoms Depend on Exposure

Symptoms following contaminated seafood consumption may include watery diarrhea, abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, fever, and chills

Wound infections may present with redness, pain, tenderness, swelling, warmth, skin discoloration, drainage, or fever. These infections can worsen quickly and develop into necrotizing fasciitis, which destroys tissue beneath the skin. This complication has led to V. vulnificus being described as a flesh-eating bacterium, although multiple bacterial species can cause necrotizing fasciitis

Underlying Conditions Increase Severe Illness Risk

Anyone can contract Vibrio bacteria, but severe complications are more likely among people with liver disease, weakened immune systems, or other chronic medical conditions. Early recognition and treatment are therefore critical when a rapidly progressing wound infection follows coastal water exposure

Preventive measures include keeping open wounds away from saltwater and brackish water or covering them with waterproof bandages. Wounds exposed to seawater should be washed thoroughly with soap and clean water

Consumers should also avoid raw or undercooked oysters and other shellfish. Clinicians should remain alert following tropical storms or hurricanes, when seawater may be displaced into new areas and exposure opportunities may increase
