    Protein
Dr Sudhir Kumar explained that the old idea of having to consume protein within 30 minutes of a workout has largely been replaced by better evidence. (Istock- Representative images)

Think you need to gulp down a protein shake the moment your workout ends to build muscle? Hyderabad-based senior doctor Dr Sudhir Kumar says the popular 30-minute protein rule may not be as important as many people believe. Taking to X, Dr Kumar shared an evidence-based thread addressing common questions around protein intake, strength training and recovery. He explained how much protein recreational lifters actually need, whether eating more protein is always better and why total daily intake matters more than rushing to consume a shake immediately after exercise.

How much protein do you need for strength training?

For a 75 kg adult who does 30 to 40 minutes of strength training three times a week, Dr Kumar suggested an intake of approximately 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kg of body weight each day. That works out to around 90 to 120 grams of protein daily.According to Dr Kumar, most recreational lifters do not need to consume 2 to 3 grams of protein per kg every day. While protein plays an important role in building and preserving muscle and supporting recovery, it is only one part of the equation. He also highlighted progressive resistance training, adequate calorie intake and good sleep as important factors for muscle growth.

Should you eat all your protein in one meal?

Dr Kumar’s answer is no. While the body can digest a large amount of protein, muscle protein synthesis reaches a plateau after a moderate amount is consumed in one meal. Any additional protein can still be used by the body, but it does not necessarily translate into proportionally greater muscle building. For a 75 kg person, Dr Kumar suggested around 0.25 to 0.4 grams of protein per kg per meal. That means roughly 20 to 30 grams of protein per meal. He noted that older adults may benefit from around 30 to 40 grams per meal.Instead of consuming 90 grams of protein at dinner and little during the rest of the day, the intake can be spread across three or four protein-rich meals. For example, a person could aim for around 30 grams at breakfast, 30 grams at lunch and 30 grams at dinner to reach 90 grams in a day.

Do you really need a protein shake immediately after working out?

This is where Dr Kumar challenges a common fitness belief. He explained that the old idea of having to consume protein within 30 minutes of finishing a workout has largely been replaced by better evidence. According to Dr Kumar, consuming around 20 to 40 grams of high-quality protein within roughly two hours before or after strength training is a reasonable approach. The exact minute, he stressed, is not critical. More importantly, total daily protein intake matters far more than precise protein timing. So, if you had a protein-rich meal one or two hours before your workout, there is generally no need to rush for a protein shake immediately after exercising. The amino acids from that meal are still available to the body.

    What are good

Dr Kumar listed a few protein-rich foods, which include eggs, milk, Greek yoghurt, paneer, fish, chicken, soy, lentils and pulses. For plant-based protein sources, he suggested combining pulses with cereals to improve protein quality. He also recommended aiming for around 2 to 3 grams of leucine per meal, a level that can naturally be achieved through many high-quality animal protein sources or larger servings of plant proteins.

Do healthy people actually need protein supplements?

Not necessarily. Dr Kumar said that if a healthy person can meet their daily protein requirement through food, protein supplements do not provide an additional advantage.

Can eating more protein build more muscle?

There is a limit. Dr Kumar explained that once protein requirements are adequately met, factors such as progressive overload, sleep, energy balance and consistency become much more important than adding another protein shake. The key message from Dr Kumar’s thread is that muscle growth is not determined by one protein shake or one perfectly timed meal. Meeting daily protein needs while consistently training, eating enough and recovering well matters much more.Add ET Logo
