New obesity group aims to ease healthcare burden

The inaugural ceremony for the International Obesity Society (IOS) China Macao Chapter was held yesterday at The Venetian Macao Cotai Expo, aiming to introduce cutting-edge international academic standards and technologies, elevate local medical capabilities, conduct public science outreach to dispel weight-loss misconceptions, and reduce healthcare burdens
IOS China Macao Chapter President Iao Sok Soi said in a speech yesterday that obesity and metabolic disorders have become major global public health challenges. Macau faces similar hurdles – including overweight children, adult metabolic disorders, and nutritional imbalances among the elderly – driving an urgent societal demand for standardised and internationalised obesity prevention and control services
Iao highlighted that the chapter’s establishment closely aligns with the national “Healthy China” strategy and the local government’s “Healthy Macao” blueprint, filling a void for an authoritative international obesity platform and marking a major milestone in Macau’s metabolic health sector
She noted that obesity-related health issues are becoming increasingly prominent across allage demographics in Macau, adding that the organisation will focus on four priority initiatives: (1) fostering exchanges between Macau’s obesity prevention sector, the Chinese mainland,and the global community; (2) launching localised, public-benefit health initiatives for schoolchildren, adults, and the elderly; (3) integrating cross-disciplinary experts in medicine, nutrition, and public health to nurture young professionals; and (4) hosting ongoing public science outreach to assist the local government in refining life-cycle nutrition policies.
Meanwhile, an expert roundtable forum on debunking obesity myths was held following the inauguration. The one-day forum convened with international experts, healthcare practitioners, and residents from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau to breaking down weight-loss misconceptions and promoting scientific weight-management concepts

4-day Guangdong-Macau fair draws 90,000 visitors
The four-day GMBPF, which concluded yesterday at The Venetian Macao Cotai Expo, attracted over 90,000 visitors, including 1,600 trade professionals. More than 460 business-matching sessions were held during the event, facilitating the signing of 49 cooperation agreements—approximately 90 percent of which were related to Macau’s “1+4” appropriate economic diversification strategy
Nearly 30 companies from Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Chinese mainland signed project agreements to invest in Macau or Portuguese-speaking countries, according to a statement released by the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) yesterday.
