    Mental health conditions affect millions of people around the world. Among them, schizophrenia is one of the most severe. Around 20 million people have to live with it every day, accounting for over 13 million years of life lived (YLD) with a disability annually

    Many scientists and studies have proven a connection between the immune system and mental health. Nowadays, laboratories can even purchase PBMCs for research from suppliers like Preci. In many cases, this includes biospecimens from patients with schizophrenia. Research using PBMCs from individuals with schizophrenia has identified immune-related signatures that may contribute to future biomarker discovery and improved understanding of disease mechanisms

    How Schizophrenia Affects the Person and the Society

    While severe, schizophrenia varies from patient to patient. In some, only one psychotic episode might happen once a year. Others are constantly trying to live a normal life between many episodes while struggling with simple tasks and functions. Many individuals with schizophrenia experience periods of symptom worsening and improvement over time

    The symptoms of the disease affect more than just the patient, however. The condition also creates substantial social and economic challenges, including healthcare costs, reduced employment opportunities, and caregiver burden. Both direct and indirect costs of the condition can be estimated at billions of US dollars due to:

    • unemployment;
    • absence from work and school;
    • mortality of patients with the disease.

    These costs continue growing. Yet, early diagnosis could prevent the socioeconomic struggle. The earlier patients are diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome. However, reliable biological markers for early schizophrenia detection remain an unmet research need, and PBMC-based studies represent one promising avenue of investigation

    Early Diagnosis

    The exact causes of schizophrenia have not been discovered yet. Although it has a biological basis and some research has suggested that the patients’ brain structures might be different, it’s still hard to tell whether a biological diagnosis could be possible. Even psychological evaluation won’t show much in early stages, as the symptoms are:

    • social withdrawal;
    • poor concentration;
    • isolation;
    • rapidly changing friends;
    • difficulty sleeping
    • irritability.

    These early changes can overlap with symptoms observed in other psychiatric or developmental conditions, making diagnosis challenging. When it reaches later stages, it is often misdiagnosed as other mental health conditions, such as bipolar disorder. So, the effectiveness of the treatment is also low

    Changing the Perspective on Clinical Diagnosis

    When a potentially schizophrenic patient receives a diagnosis, professionals consult them via interview-based methods. Despite following the international guidelines like the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD), 11th revision, clinical assessment depends on expert evaluation and interpretation of symptoms, which can be challenging during early disease stages. But subjective interpretation doesn’t have to be the only way to discover the early stages of the disease.

    There is no way to prevent the conditions. Early treatment, however, has proven times more effective than late therapy in chronic patients. This means early clinical diagnosis can heavily impact the personal lives of schizophrenic patients, which calls for a new approach

    Biomarker-based approaches may complement existing clinical assessments in the future. They could be faster, more effective, and overcome the common limitations and the human factor of psychiatric evaluations. Moreover, both the patient and the healthcare system could benefit from the lower cost of diagnosis. That doesn’t mean the evaluation won’t be feasible — the two could be supportive of each other, depending on the budget and the accuracy required

    Research and discovery of various biomarkers tied to schizophrenia in PBMCs could also facilitate further research and development of other treatments. We could find the disease pathways and treat patients based on immunological biomarker changes

    Existing Milestones in the PBMC Schizophrenia-Related Research

    Several studies have reported differences in immune-related markers measured in PBMCs from individuals with schizophrenia. These are the T helper cell CD36 and monocyte GLUT1. Both biomarkers have been identified in patients at different stages of the condition, including those who have never been medically treated for schizophrenia, and those medicated at that moment

    Additionally, the analysis clearly indicated the difference between this disease and other diagnoses, like autism and bipolar disorder. Thus, the PBMC approach shows potential success, especially if combined with further development, expanded research, and machine-learning tools. Future biomarker panels may help improve disease stratification, treatment response prediction, and understanding of disease biology

    Schizophrenia Diagnosis and Treatment Needs Further Development

    PBMCs have become an accessible and novel asset for immunology research. Preci provides human biospecimens and cell models that support immunology and disease research. Schizophrenia, however, remains hard to diagnose and treat, despite having a link to the human immune system

    PBMC-based biomarker research may contribute to future tools that support earlier detection, patient stratification, and treatment development, while complementing clinical evaluation. With further research and development, it can become a supporting stage in patient treatment, allowing us to overcome common limitations that come with the human factor
