Social media has labelled GLP-1 receptor agonists as “miracle” weight-loss drugs. However, these medicines represent more than a passing trend. Obesity is a complex chronic disease often associated with diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular problems. GLP-1 receptor agonists, initially developed for type 2 diabetes, now play an important role in obesity management

    How Do They Work?

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a natural hormone released by the intestine after meals. It signals the brain to promote fullness, slows gastric emptying and stimulates insulin release in response to food

GLP-1 receptor agonists mimic these effects, improving blood glucose control, increasing satiety and reducing food intake. Consequently, they support significant weight loss

    Significant Weight-Loss Results

Among medicines in this class, semaglutide and tirzepatide have demonstrated particularly strong results. In the STEP trials, semaglutide produced an average weight loss of around 15% over approximately 68 weeks when combined with lifestyle measures. Similarly, the SURMOUNT-1 trial found that tirzepatide, which acts on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, produced average weight loss of 20% or more in many participants

As per the press release, these advances have helped shift obesity treatment towards evidence-based, long-term disease management

    Benefits Beyond the Weighing Scale

Importantly, GLP-1 receptor agonists offer benefits beyond weight reduction. Studies have shown improvements in blood glucose control and cardiovascular outcomes, while some therapies have also demonstrated kidney-related benefits

Semaglutide has shown cardiovascular benefits even among people with obesity who do not have diabetes. Thus, these medicines may help reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other obesity-related complications

Nausea, vomiting, bloating and constipation are common, particularly during the initial weeks. Weight loss may also involve muscle loss, making adequate protein intake and resistance exercise important

Rare complications include pancreatitis and gallbladder problems. These medicines are generally avoided in people with a personal or family history of certain rare thyroid cancers and require caution in patients with severe diabetic retinopathy. Therefore, treatment should always follow a medical evaluation and physician supervision

    Part of a Long-Term Strategy

GLP-1 receptor agonists work best alongside healthy eating, regular physical activity, adequate sleep and stress management. Moreover, stopping treatment can lead to weight regain, highlighting the chronic nature of obesity

These medicines represent a major advance in obesity care, but they are not a substitute for lifestyle changes. Used appropriately, they can be a powerful tool for achieving sustained weight management and better health
