Eli Lilly’s Foundayo is the second oral weight-loss pill to be approved in Europe, after U.K. approval. On Monday, the U.K.’s Medicines and Healthcare products regulatory agency announced approval of orforglipron, to be marketed as Foundayo, for helping patients lose weight and manage type 2 diabetes. But there’s a catch for British patients: the drug will initially be available only by private prescription. Access through the National Health Service depends on a cost-effectiveness review by NICE, the agency that decides what the public system will pay for.
The Food Restriction Difference

Lilly has stressed that Foundayo, a small-molecule medication, can be taken regardless of meals. The Wegovy pill, by contrast, must be taken in the morning with water, and patients need to wait at least 30 minutes after taking it before eating or drinking anything

Early Sales Tell Two Stories
After its U.S. debut in April, Foundayo brought in $98 million in second-quarter sales. That is real money, but U.S. adoption has lagged behind the Wegovy pill so far. Eli Lilly CEO David Ricks told CNBC in April that the drug is brand-new and needs time for doctors and patients to get familiar with it
An estimated 300,000 patients started the Wegovy pill in the U.K. during its first three weeks of availability. That is a fast start by any measure
Still, investors have been watching oral Wegovy sales closely, and second-quarter numbers came in slightly below some analyst expectations. Novo CEO Mike Doustdar brushed off those concerns, telling CNBC this month that it is still early for the product
The shift toward oral treatments is not just about convenience. Pills are simpler to produce at scale, easier for patients to store at home, and do not require the same injection training or cold-chain logistics as some injectables.
