Summary:
- The U.K. approved Eli Lilly’s orforglipron, sold as Foundayo, for weight management and type 2 diabetes.
- It is the second oral weight-loss pill to be cleared in Europe.
- Foundayo can be taken with or without food and starts as a private prescription pending a NICE review.
The pill version of the weight-loss drug war just got a new front
Eli Lilly’s Foundayo is the second oral weight-loss pill to be approved in Europe, after U.K. approval. On Monday, the U.K.’s Medicines and Healthcare products regulatory agency announced approval of orforglipron, to be marketed as Foundayo, for helping patients lose weight and manage type 2 diabetes. But there’s a catch for British patients: the drug will initially be available only by private prescription. Access through the National Health Service depends on a cost-effectiveness review by NICE, the agency that decides what the public system will pay for.
The Food Restriction Difference
Here’s where the two pills diverge in a way that could matter a lot to patients
Lilly has stressed that Foundayo, a small-molecule medication, can be taken regardless of meals. The Wegovy pill, by contrast, must be taken in the morning with water, and patients need to wait at least 30 minutes after taking it before eating or drinking anything
That might sound like a minor inconvenience, but for people who take daily medication, it’s a real lifestyle difference. Lilly is betting that convenience wins

The two drugs also differ under the hood. Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient as Novo’s injectable versions. Foundayo is a small-molecule medicine, a different class of compound entirely
Early Sales Tell Two Stories
After its U.S. debut in April, Foundayo brought in $98 million in second-quarter sales. That is real money, but U.S. adoption has lagged behind the Wegovy pill so far. Eli Lilly CEO David Ricks told CNBC in April that the drug is brand-new and needs time for doctors and patients to get familiar with it
An estimated 300,000 patients started the Wegovy pill in the U.K. during its first three weeks of availability. That is a fast start by any measure
Still, investors have been watching oral Wegovy sales closely, and second-quarter numbers came in slightly below some analyst expectations. Novo CEO Mike Doustdar brushed off those concerns, telling CNBC this month that it is still early for the product
The shift toward oral treatments is not just about convenience. Pills are simpler to produce at scale, easier for patients to store at home, and do not require the same injection training or cold-chain logistics as some injectables. That could reshape cost structures and pricing power across the market. Both companies are betting heavily on this format, and the U.K. approval serves as an early test of how quickly patients and doctors embrace the change
What This Means for Your Portfolio
The bigger picture here is about where the entire weight-loss market is heading. Doustdar put it plainly: “I could see a future where actually this market is, to a large extent, a pill market.”
That is a notable statement from the executive of a company whose blockbuster injectables built the category. The logic is simple. Pills are easier to manufacture at scale, easier for patients to store, and easier to take. If the market shifts toward oral treatments, the competitive math changes
Both companies are positioning for that future now, and the race is likely to intensify from here. Analysts will be watching whether Foundayo’s convenience advantage translates into market share, and whether the Wegovy pill’s head start in Europe holds
For investors, the takeaway is that the weight-loss drug story is no longer just about injections. The pill battle is underway, and the winners will be decided by which drug patients actually want to take every day. That is a question no analyst can answer, but the early numbers suggest patients are ready to choose
