KERSHAW, S.C. (WIS) – Some Kershaw County students are back in the classroom with a new re

Kershaw County School District is partnering with Sandhills Medical to bring medical and counseling services into 12 schools during the 2026–27 school year, officials said

School officials said a growing <a href="https://healthylife7.com/fauci-rfk-jr-and-the-latest-in-american-health/” title=”Fauci, RFK Jr., and the latest in American health”>healthcare desert within the school system prompted the new initiative. Amanda Duke, CEO of Sandhills Medical, said the partnership is designed to reach students who lack access to regular care

“There are children in this school district who don’t have healthcare,” Duke said. “They don’t have health insurance, so they’re not receiving the care that they need.”

Sandhills doctors and care teams will provide services including checkups, sports physicals, sick visits and counseling at school campuses

“The goal of all of this is to be able to treat those children here while they’re at school, keep them in school, if at all possible, but most importantly get them the care that they need when they need it,” Duke said

Matia Goodwin, with Kershaw County School District, said bringing care to campus also helps remove barriers families face in accessing services

“We want kids in school so that way students are able to receive services during the school day, then they’re able to go back into the classroom and be productive and successful,” Goodwin said

Services are available at the following schools, depending on location:

Counseling and medical care: Camden Elementary School, Doby’s Mill Elementary School, North Central Elementary School, Pine Tree Hill Elementary School, Wateree Elementary School

Counseling only: Lugoff Elementary School, Jackson Elementary School, Lugoff-Elgin Middle School, Continuous Learning Center

Medical care only: Camden Middle School, North Central Middle School, Leslie M. Stover Middle School

Parents or guardians must provide written consent through a New Patient Packet, available in print at each school. Visits and sessions are scheduled during the school day to limit missed class time

The initiative is also open to faculty and staff. Officials said no student will be turned away — families without insurance pay based on household income through a sliding fee scale, and the program accepts Medicaid and most insurance plans
