The total solar eclipse visible across various parts of the world on August 12 – and partially in the U.S. – has not only captured the attention of astronomers and skywatchers. It has also prompted some people to wonder whether an event like this can affect mood, sleep or even mental health. Psychologists have a clear answer: there is no scientific evidence showing that eclipses cause direct psychological changes, although they can trigger certain emotional reactions in some people
What emotional changes can an eclipse cause?
Psychology experts say an eclipse does not change someone’s personality or suddenly alter their behavior. However, the way each person interprets the event can influence how they experience it. Factors such as suggestion, expectations or the cultural significance attached to the phenomenon can produce a wide range of emotional responses
In fact, for many people, an eclipse is a positive and fascinating experience. Witnessing such a rare astronomical event can inspire curiosity, awe or even a sense of transcendence. It is not unusual for some viewers to describe these moments as special experiences, prompting them to reflect on their place in the world or on personal matters
Eclipses have also historically been surrounded by symbolism. In numerous cultures, they have been interpreted as signs of change, transformation or renewal, a perception that still persists among some people today. Although these beliefs have no scientific basis, they can encourage introspection and personal reflection around the time of the event
On the other hand, specialists point out that some particularly sensitive people may experience anxiety or unease when the sky suddenly darkens during an eclipse, or because of superstitions and beliefs associated with the phenomenon. Likewise, there is no proven link between eclipses and sleep disorders, although anticipation, nerves or concern about the event may temporarily affect sleep among those who experience it with heightened emotions. Ultimately, rather than the eclipse itself, it is the way each person interprets it that can influence their emotions that day.
