But across the country, extreme politicians desperate to gain power are attacking the LGBTQ+ community, particularly transgender and non-binary youth, and weaponizing critical issues to rally support around anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. State legislatures, governors, administrative agencies and the Federal Government have been andare taking steps to eliminate access to medically necessary, age-appropriate, and safe health care backed by decades of research and supported by every major medical association, together representing over 1.3 million U.S. doctors. On June 18, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a devastating ruling in US v. Skrmetti, upholding Tennessee’s ban on affirming healthcare treatments for transgender youth (Senate Bill 1). By deciding that SB1 is constitutional, the Supreme Court has made it more difficult to challenge similar laws in the 27 other states where such laws are currently in effect.
On August 11, 2026, the Trump administration’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued an outrageous new rulebarring Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) benefits from being used on behalf of transgender youth to pay for best-practice health care recommended by their physician. These restrictions are currently scheduled to take effect on October 12, 2026
