But we are all also susceptible to psychology’s most seductive products: tidy theories that give memorable names to complicated parts of being human
Most of us cannot trace every online claim through the academic literature. Even if we tried, so much is now published that it is increasingly possible to find some evidence for almost any plausible belief. The question we need to ask is whether the evidence deserves the weight being placed upon it
“Research shows” encourages us to imagine large representative samples, careful experiments, independent replications and researchers following the evidence wherever it leads—but rarely is this the level of evidence supporting a popular claim
Sometimes the evidence is based on a handful of undergraduates who completed an artificial computer task, or perhaps an online questionnaire answered by an uncertain blend of humans and bots, or five colleagues who were interviewed before their answers became themes bearing an uncanny resemblance to the researcher’s original theory. Perhaps the paper was then reviewed by a couple of academics, published in a journal and then plastered across social media
When Catchy Ideas Become Facts
Consider the five “love languages.” Beneath that popular notion lies a sensible observation: People differ in how they prefer to give and receive affection. The ideas that everyone has a primary love language, that there are precisely five of them, and that relationships improve when partners speak one another’s language, are add-ons—and a recent review of the evidence found little support for these claims. People generally value all five forms of affection, studies have not consistently recovered five categories, and matching partners by a supposed primary language does not reliably predict greater relationship satisfaction. But an ordinary truth had already become a typology, a genre of quizzes, and a psychological system promoted in bestselling books.
The “marshmallow test” followed a similar course. A study found that a child’s willingness to resist one marshmallow in return for two later was an indicator of the self-control required for future success. Yet a larger conceptual replication found a substantially smaller association, reduced by two-thirds after accounting for family background, early cognitive ability and the home environment
The original test may have measured something, but it did not necessarily reveal a four-year-old’s destiny
It would be comforting to blame pop psychology: decent research mangled by marketing departments, influencers and airport books. But weak popular theories point towards deeper problems with psychology itself—its methods, incentives and confidence in its status as a science
What Happens Under the Hood
Once an idea catches on, later researchers cite its claims, adopt its language, reuse its measures and investigate increasingly specific extensions. Qualifications disappear as one paper cites another. Eventually, the quantity of research creates the impression that the underlying theory has been repeatedly confirmed
But a thousand examples of weak evidence do not add up to strong evidence. They may only demonstrate that many researchers boarded the same bandwagon
Peer review offers less protection than many assume. It can sometimes improve a paper, but it does not reproduce the findings, audit the data or establish that the interpretation is correct. A meta-analysis of reviewer agreement found that reviewers frequently reach different judgements about the same manuscripts. The system relies on mass unpaid labour while the volume of papers expands. Editors can struggle to recruit reviewers, so “expert reviewed” may mean assessed by the last two academics—out of a list of 100—who agreed to spend an unpaid afternoon reviewing a paper tangentially related to something they co-authored 10 years ago because they happened not to be too busy that day.
The replication crisis has challenged psychology’s credibility. In one influential attempt to reproduce 100 published studies, replication effects were on average around half the original size. Only 36 percent of replications produced statistically significant results, compared with 97 percent of the originals. This did not prove that 64 percent of psychology is false, but it did demonstrate that publication provides much less assurance than its assumed authority might imply
The crisis has prompted many to endorse valuable reforms, including preregistration, open materials and larger collaborations. However, the uneven adoption of these steps has also illuminated the vast differences in rigour across the discipline
Academic research is an industry. Researchers need publications, universities need “impact,” journals need content, and governments, companies, campaigners and media outlets need “evidence” for their claims. Weak evidence can reach millions wearing the authority of science

Researchers are not neutral evidence-processing machines. They have careers, preferred theories, political commitments, and social and moral beliefs. Fashionable questions attract support and funding, while some unfashionable questions may never be asked. Researchers can become invested in demonstrating a particular form of injustice or social harm, while findings that complicate that preferred account receive less enthusiastic scrutiny
One systematic analysis found that social-psychology abstracts described conservatives more negatively and treated conservatism as requiring explanation more often than liberalism. The findings are not necessarily false but their pursuit may shows how disciplinary assumptions influence what becomes a research problem
Activism begins with a desired destination. Research should begin with a question whose answer is permitted to disappoint us. The two can inform one another, but they are not the same activity
Psychology Belongs to Everyone
Psychology did not begin with psychology departments. Observations about jealousy, attraction, conformity, status and self-deception survive in histories, proverbs, novels and songs. Shakespeare managed some useful insights into human behavior without distributing an online questionnaire or conducting a qualitative analysis of “data” from his students’ semi-structured interviews
Readers can’t be expected to carefully examine the appropriateness of every statistical test, sample, or citation used to support a piece of research. Healthy scepticism requires something simpler: a pause between encountering an attractive explanation and adopting it as truth
What did the researchers actually do? Did they observe behaviour or simply ask people to describe themselves? Were the questions likely to encourage a particular response? Could the findings reasonably be interpreted another way? And, most importantly, does the theory illuminate a messy pattern or merely conceal that mess beneath a memorable name?
Psychology is essential because understanding minds and behaviour matters. It is also extraordinarily difficult: People change across situations, misunderstand themselves and respond in different ways to being studied. And, importantly, researchers are almost never impartial
We should continue looking for explanations but we should also become more sceptical of researchers who find sweeping ones too easily
Psychology will deserve greater public trust when it becomes more comfortable to say the unfashionable words, We don’t know
