Barry Patel, owner of the Hilton Garden Inn on South Padre Island, is sponsoring a free community mat pilates class with the goal of encouraging both residents and hotel guests to move more, feel better and make wellness part of their everyday lives

Patel said the idea came from a growing trend he has noticed among travelers. More people who vacation are also looking for ways to stay active while they are away from home

“More and more folks that vacation are looking to also get or stay fit whilst they are with us on vacation,” Patel said. “I feel the need when I travel, so when I saw the opportunity, well it didn’t take much convincing.”

The class is intended for both the local community and guests staying at the hotel. Patel said the activity is meant to encourage people of all groups to get moving and activate the body and mind through exercise

“This activity encourages all groups to get from a stationary place and get their lymphatic system, muscles and mind into action,” Patel said. “Something we all need more of.”

For Patel, supporting wellness opportunities is about more than offering an activity. He said the physical and mental well-being of the community is extremely important to him. He hopes neighbors, friends and even those he does not personally know will take part in the class and work toward living fuller, healthier lives

Patel said he believes exercise can benefit participants physically and mentally. Physically, he said it may help lessen the effects of diabetes, obesity, blood pressure issues and digestive problems. Mentally, he said this type of exercise has been shown to lessen the likelihood of illnesses such as depression and anxiety

The free community mat class is also part of Patel’s broader interest in making South Padre Island a more wellness-focused place for both residents and visitors

When asked whether he sees the class as part of a larger wellness effort. “Yes, I have worked to add parks, beach activities and a non-motorized wind sport facility on South Padre Island. I want to also introduce nutritional programs in our community promoting healthy eating.”

Through the free class, Patel hopes to create an opportunity for people to step away from a stationary lifestyle, move their bodies and connect wellness with the South Padre Island experience

The free community mat pilates classes take place Fridays and Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. Yoga mats are available in the hotel gift shop. For more information, visit the Hilton Garden Inn South Padre Island Beachfront website

[Sportschosun Jang Jong-ho] A study has found that high-intensity exercise involving 30 seconds of all-out effort followed by four minutes of rest may be more beneficial to health than prolonged moderate-intensity exercise.
