‘Wasting your time’: FIFO worker divides internet by claiming the industry is a ‘single man’s lifestyle‘ that makes relationships almost impossible
A FIFO worker has boldly claimed that the fly-in-fly-out industry is a “single man’s lifestyle” not built for successful relationships – sparking fierce debate online.

A fly-in-fly-out worker has branded the FIFO industry a “single man’s lifestyle” that is not built to sustain a successful relationship.
FIFO worker Jake Shirms gave his two cents worth on why the industry makes it hard to sustain a successful relationship
“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, FIFO is a single man’s lifestyle,” Jake said in the video shared on his TikTok
“I don’t care what the old fellas say who have been married for 40 years – this doesn’t apply to you.”

According to Jake, younger men who choose the profession should stay single, focus on building their wealth and not waste their time on a relationship that’s likely to fail
“But you young guys looking to get into the FIFO space, and you’re thinking about getting a girl, you are wasting your time,” he added
“Use this as a time to make some money, buy a house, do whatever it is you need to do and then look at settling down.”
He said that during his time on FIFO worksites, he has come across countless divorcees and heard endless tales of relationship drama from colleagues with partners back home.
“But you spend enough time on these mine sites, and the amount of divorces you’ll hear of, the amount of drama you’ll hear about – this lifestyle is not conducive to a long-term relationship,” he said
“It’s an obvious concept which a lot of people don’t seem to understand.”
Jake pointed out that if a fly-in-fly-out worker’s partner is “happy” to be apart from them for an extended period of time, the relationship may not be all that healthy
“If your missus can be without you for three weeks out of the month for you to be back one week and she’s happy with that, it’s probably not going to be a great relationship,” he said
“Relationships require intimacy, and intimacy requires presence, which you’re not if you work FIFO.”
“So be smart, boys, make your money, do what you need to do and then look at settling down.”
Commenters were left divided by the man’s bold take, and some called him out for the “horrible relationship advice”
“It’s not for the weak. Been together almost 19 years, and I hate when my partner is away,” one commenter wrote
“My husband is on a two-on, two-off roster. But we’ve been doing really well together, no drama,” commented a second.
“We are both happy and have been doing it for 11 years now. I find it really good, and it gives both of us space.”
One commenter wrote that the man “clearly picked the wrong Mrs”
“I have a Mrs that supports me and shows me support regardless. Depends on your misses, if you’re willing to commit to that little type of relationship, and if she loves you for you.”
