West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes in Hopatcong, prompting local health officials to remind residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites. While human cases have not yet been reported in New Jersey yet this year according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, officials warn to take precautions to avoid contracting the virus

The Sussex County Office of Mosquito Control reported the detection as the region enters the peak season for the mosquito-borne illness. The CDC states that West Nile virus cases are most commonly reported in late August to early September

While 80% of those infected with the virus do not develop symptoms, about 20% may experience fever, headaches, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea or a rash. Some symptoms can continue for several weeks or months

Less than 1% of infected people develop a serious illness affecting the central nervous system. Severe symptoms may include a high fever, neck stiffness, disorientation, muscle weakness or paralysis if left untreated. In rare cases, the illness can be fatal

Older adults, people with chronic health conditions and those with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of developing severe symptoms

Sussex County health officials and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection recommend using a U.S. EPA-rated insect repellent and wearing loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants while outdoors. Residents can also reduce their exposure by limiting outdoor activity around dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes tend to be more active. Officials recommend repairing or installing screens on windows and doors and using air conditioning when possible

Residents should also check their properties for standing water, which can provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Water can collect in items such as flowerpots, buckets, birdbaths, children’s toys and clogged gutters

More information about West Nile virus, its symptoms and prevention is available on the CDC’s website
