Toxic algae prompts health warnings for 2 Kitsap lakes

The Kitsap Public Health District issued advisories warning residents to avoid all contact with Wye Lake and Panther Lake due to the presence of potentially toxic cyanobacteria

According to notices published Thursday, exposure to cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, can make both people and animals sick. The Health District said that algae blooms can make a lake look green, cloudy or the water appear like foam, scum or matting is floating on its surface.

To prevent exposure, the Health District advises against any contact with the water, including for pets and livestock. Residents should also refrain from consuming fish caught while the bloom is active and thoroughly rinse all boats and trailers before heading into another body of water

No illnesses have been reported at this time, and the health district will continue to monitor for cyanobacteria and post updates as conditions change. The Heath District urges the public to report health concerns related to the lakes by calling 360-728-2235 or submit a statement through their website.

Panther Lake is a fishing and boating hub located about 10 miles west of Bremerton near Panther Lake Road West

Wye Lake is located in South Kitsap, just east of Belfair near Wye Lake Boulevard Southwest with year-round public boat access.
