He may spend much of his current time focused on soccer business in Wales, but Ryan Reynolds has also had to get himself into incredible shape for some of his Hollywood roles. And according to the man who made it possible, Reynolds’ superhero physique was built through consistency, not by dragging himself through punishing workouts every day

The actor spent years getting into the sort of shape required to squeeze into a Deadpool suit, detailed by his longtime personal trainer, Don Saladino, who said the secret is not treating every gym visit like one of those high-energy – even in slow mo – battle scenes

“Not every day has to be a Level 10 on the workout meter,”Saladino told Men’s Health. Instead, Reynolds’ training intensity is adjusted according to how he feels when he arrives

That may sound surprisingly forgiving for a Hollywood workout plan. In practice, it allows the actor to keep training without turning ordinary fatigue or a minor physical problem into an injury

    Ryan Reynolds’ workouts prioritize consistency

Saladino, who has also trained stars including Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan, has worked with Reynolds since Green Lantern. Rather than attempting dramatic transformations immediately before filming, the aim is to keep him close to camera-ready throughout the year

The approach has become increasingly important as Reynolds has grown older and accumulated the aches that come with years of action sequences. His sessions now begin with around 10 to 15 minutes of mobility work

The actor has also moved away from workouts devoted to exhausting one body part. His full-body sessions generally include an upper-body push, an upper-body pull, a squat, a hip-hinge movement and core work. The volume can be spread across several days instead of concentrated into a single brutal workout

Harder exercise is not always better exercise

Reynolds may finish with short bursts on an exercise bike or vertical climber, but the “push until you collapse” philosophy has no place in the program. Some days are demanding; others are deliberately more manageable

It is a useful lesson for anyone who assumes progress depends on leaving the gym completely drained. A workout adapted to a person’s sleep, energy and physical condition can still move them forward

So, if you’re looking for that sharp-tongued superhero look, now you have some extra tips… well, at least on the muscle part
