Texas is one of at least 17 states currently being affected by a parasite known as Cyclospora, which can cause digestive issues

Cyclosporiasis, the intestinal illness caused by the ingestion of Cyclospora, is commonly seen in the warmer months as people consume more raw produce. However, this year’s outbreak has seen an uptick in cases throughout the country. While no deaths have been reported, the CDC foundat least 145 reported casesnationwide

A map by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cited up to30 cases reportedin the Texas area alone

The parasite is primarily found on contaminated raw food

Symptoms take between two days and two weeks to develop. The most commonly reported symptom is cramping and bloating associated with diarrhea. Other symptoms include loss of appetite, <a href="https://healthylife7.com/amy-schumer-shows-off-slim-figure-after-candid-weight-loss-journey/" title="Amy Schumer Shows Off Slim Figure After Candid Weight Loss Journey”>weight loss, nausea and fatigue. However, infected individuals can be asymptomatic

Catherine Troisi, a professor of epidemiology at UT Health Houston’s School of Public Health, said the illness is rarely contagious and not fatal. Troisi spoke about the illness with the Texas Standard

“If you are sick, it is important to contact your healthcare provider because the illness can be treated with antibiotics,” she said. “[If] left untreated, particularly in the elderly, the very young people with immunocompromising diseases, it can be quite serious.”

The CDC and Food and Drug Administration are working with local officials to pinpoint theroisi says there could be several contaminated

The focus is on raw fruits and vegetables. Raw leafy greens like spinach and cilantro and berries like raspberries can host Cyclospora. Troisi suggests washing hands and surfaces thoroughly. She also said to wash all raw produce prior to consumption

“It may help to use a little bit of lemon juice or vinegar, something acidic to wash the fruits and vegetables,” Troisi said. “When you’re preparing these fruits and vegetables, cut away any damaged or bruised areas of it. This is not going to 100% protect you, but it’s a good start.”

As officials continue to crack down on thehould contact their healthcare provider. If tested positive, individuals should report it to their local health department
