Alirajpur women, Dindori men lead in alcohol consumption:Mandla women top tobacco use, while Indore women record highest obesity rates

Malnutrition in Madhya Pradesh is emerging as a broader health concern, extending beyond low body weight. According to the National Family Health Survey-6 (NFHS-6), women in districts such as Alirajpur, Barwani, Sheopur and Dindori have among the lowest Body Mass Index (BMI) levels in the state
At the same time, overweight and obesity are more prevalent among women in urban districts such as Indore, Bhopal and Jabalpur
The survey also highlights high levels of tobacco and alcohol consumption, particularly in tribal-dominated districts. Tobacco use among women stands at 34.9% in Mandla, while 64.8% of men in Dindori consume tobacco
Alcohol consumption is reported among 13.4% of women in Alirajpur and 41.4% of men in Dindori, highlighting a significant public health concern in these areas

Tobacco use among women rises sharply in Balaghat, Mandla and other districts
Tobacco consumption among women has increased across several districts of Madhya Pradesh, with Balaghat recording the sharpest rise
In Mandla, the proportion increased from 29.5% in NFHS-5 to 34.9% in NFHS-6, a rise of 5.4 percentage points. Narsinghpur recorded an increase from 27.2% to 30%
Balaghat saw the biggest jump, with tobacco use among women rising from 20.2% to 28.4%, an increase of 8.2 percentage points
The figure also increased in Chhindwara from 21.1% to 26.9% and in Dindori from 22.8% to 26.8%. Among these five districts, Balaghat recorded the highest increase
Dindori records highest tobacco use among men in Madhya Pradesh
Tobacco consumption is even higher among men. Against the state average of 47.7% among men aged 15 years and above, the rate stands at 64.8% in Dindori. Mandla follows closely at 64.2%, while Umaria records 64.1%
In Dindori, male tobacco consumption increased from 60.6% in NFHS-5 to 64.8% in NFHS-6, a rise of 4.2 percentage points. The figure increased from 57.5% to 64.2% in Mandla and from 59.1% to 64.1% in Umaria. Narsinghpur rose from 55.2% to 60.5%, while Panna increased from 55.5% to 60.4%
Although tobacco consumption among men increased in all five districts, Mandla recorded the largest rise at 6.7 percentage points

Alcohol consumption among women highest in Alirajpur, far above state average
Alcohol consumption among women aged 15 years and above is significantly higher in Alirajpur than the Madhya Pradesh average. While the state average stands at 1.2%, the figure in Alirajpur is 13.4%
Dindori follows at 9.6%, while Mandla records 7.8%, Umaria 4.4% and Anuppur 3.1%. Balaghat, Betul and Chhindwara also report a rate of 3.1%
Alirajpur has also recorded the sharpest increase, with alcohol consumption among women rising from 7% in NFHS-5 to 13.4% in NFHS-6, an increase of 6.4 percentage points. The rate in Dindori rose from 6.8% to 9.6%, while Mandla saw an increase from 3.6% to 7.8%. In Umaria, it doubled from 2% to 4.4%
Anuppur was the exception, with alcohol consumption among women declining from 3.7% in NFHS-5 to 3.1% in NFHS-6

Dindori records highest alcohol consumption among men, followed by Alirajpur
Alcohol consumption among men aged 15 years and above is considerably higher in several tribal-dominated districts of Madhya Pradesh
Against the state average of 18.5%, Dindori records the highest rate at 41.4%, followed closely by Alirajpur at 41.2%. Umaria stands at 39.6%, Mandla at 36.3% and Anuppur at 35.5%
Dindori recorded an increase in male alcohol consumption from 36% in NFHS-5 to 41.4% in NFHS-6, a rise of 5.4 percentage points. In Alirajpur, the figure increased from 37.4% to 41.2%, while Umaria saw a sharp rise from 29.8% to 39.6%
Mandla also recorded an increase from 28.6% to 36.3%. Among the five districts with the highest consumption, Umaria registered the steepest rise at 9.8 percentage points. Anuppur was the only district in this group to record a decline, with the rate falling marginally from 36.2% to 35.5%

Alirajpur records highest proportion of underweight women in Madhya Pradesh
The proportion of women aged 15-49 with below-normal BMI is significantly higher in Alirajpur than the Madhya Pradesh average. While the state average stands at 26.5%, the figure in Alirajpur is 43% meaning roughly one in every 2.3 women falls in the low-BMI category
Barwani follows at 39.6%, while the proportion stands at 36.8% in Sheopur, 34.2% in Dindori and 33.8% in Balaghat
The rise in Alirajpur is particularly concerning. The proportion of women with below-normal BMI increased from 19.6% in NFHS-5 to 43% in NFHS-6, marking a sharp increase of 23.4 percentage points over the five-year period

Indore records highest proportion of overweight and obese women in state

The situation in Indore has also worsened sharply, with the proportion of overweight or obese women rising from 19% in NFHS-5 to 37.8% in NFHS-6. The data highlights the contrasting nutrition challenges in Madhya Pradesh, where undernutrition and overnutrition are prevalent at the same time

Madhya Pradesh faces a dual nutrition burden as both low weight and obesity rise
The NFHS-6 data presents a growing dual nutrition challenge in Madhya Pradesh, with both undernutrition and overweight/obesity increasing among adults
Among women aged 15-49, the proportion with below-normal BMI rose from 23% in NFHS-5 to 26.5% in NFHS-6, an increase of 3.5 percentage points. Among men, it climbed from 20.8% to 28.3%, a sharper rise of 7.5 percentage points
At the same time, overweight and obesity among women increased from 16.6% to 22.2%, while the figure for men rose from 15.6% to 17.6%. The data shows that the state’s nutrition problem is no longer limited to underweight, with undernutrition and overnutrition now rising simultaneously
Indore records highest proportion of women with elevated blood sugar
Indore has the highest proportion of women with high or very high blood sugar levels, or those taking medication to control their blood sugar, according to the NFHS-6 data. Against the state average of 14.5%, Indore records 20.3%
Bhind follows at 18.4%, while Katni stands at 18.2%, Bhopal at 17.9% and Jabalpur at 17.7%. Indore has also recorded a sharp increase, with the proportion more than doubling from 9.9% in NFHS-5 to 20.3% in NFHS-6

Balaghat Leads in High BP Among Women
The proportion of women in the state who have high BP or are taking medication to control it is 14.2%. Balaghat tops with 22.6%. This is followed by Bhopal 21.1%, Seoni 21%, Dindori 20.2% and Hoshangabad 19.2%

High BP in men, Jabalpur leads
The state average rate among men is 15.4%, but in Jabalpur it is 24.2%. This is followed by Balaghat 21.7%, Seoni 21.6%, Bhopal 21.3% and Hoshangabad 21.3%. Jabalpur’s situation has worsened from 20.1% in NFHS-5

Blood sugar problems rise faster among men than women in Madhya Pradesh
The proportion of adults with high or very high blood sugar, or those taking medication to control it, has increased significantly in Madhya Pradesh
Among women, the rate rose from 9.8% in NFHS-5 to 14.5% in NFHS-6, an increase of 4.7 percentage points. Among men, it climbed from 12.2% to 18.3%, marking a sharper rise of 6.1 percentage points
The data indicates that the increase in blood sugar-related problems has been more pronounced among men than women
High blood pressure declines among both men and women
The NFHS-6 data presents a comparatively positive trend for high blood pressure. Among women, the proportion with high BP or those taking medication to control it fell from 20.6% in NFHS-5 to 14.2% in NFHS-6, a decline of 6.4 percentage points
Among men, the rate also dropped from 22.7% to 15.4%, marking a reduction of 7.3 percentage points. Unlike the trends seen in several indicators related to tobacco, alcohol, blood sugar and BMI, the state-level prevalence of high blood pressure has declined
