Chirp, featuring Jay Frydenlund, Brian Long, Sam Naples, and Patrick Blommel, has been hard at work since their formation in 2015. Touring and recording consistently since the project began, their fresh sound has taken them across the country to play a large variety of venues and festivals. Between 2017 and 2024, Chirp released six albums, including Live from Brownstown, In Motion, and Live Motion. This year, Chirp released their seventh album, Torque
Based in Detroit, MI, this four-piece band does its fair share of genre-hopping. Often playing in the styles of progressive rock/funk and jazz-fusion, their sound maintains a melodic center. The group features a wide array of originals and covers in their live sets and puts together dynamic, high-energy shows. Though their music ties in many technical elements, an equal emphasis is put on grooving and keeping people moving. Chirp takes influence from Snarky Puppy, Steely Dan, Led Zeppelin, James Brown, Yes, Daft Punk, Vulfpeck, and The Beatles, to name a few.
“Another Way” is a blistering, funky workout of a song. Opening with tight unison bass and guitar playing, it quickly transitions to the adrenaline-fueled verse before sliding into the beautiful chorus that feels like the escape the singer yearns for. In keeping with the band’s diverse influences, “Another Way” utilizes a Thin Lizzy-esque twin guitar attack on the interludes, cool retro synth sounds, and jazz-informed bass and guitar solos. They keep at the frenetic pace without ever slacking on the energy, making this song a must-hear.
