    NEED TO KNOW

    • Amy Slaton lost over 150 lbs. after qualifying for bariatric surgery during the first season of 1000-Lb. Sisters

    • Her <a href="https://healthylife7.com/experimental-weight-loss-jab-outperforms-mounjaro-in-latest-study/" title="Experimental weight loss jab outperforms Mounjaro in latest study”>weight loss was motivated by her desire to become a mom and she now has two sons

    • Amy has shifted focus to mental health after her divorce and was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder

Amy Slaton has documented her weight loss journey on the TLC show 1000-Lb. Sisters since 2020

She and her sister Tammy Slaton had a combined weight of over 1,000 lbs. when the show — now in its ninth season — first premiered. Amy initially weighed in at 406 lbs., but she qualified for bariatric surgery by the end of the first season and has since lost over 150 lbs

“I can go to the store and not worry about my looks because I feel good about myself regardless of what other people say about me,” Amy told PEOPLE ahead of the show’s premiere in December 2019. “I’m beautiful the way I am.”

Amy has been open about how her desire to be a mom motivated her to lose weight. Following her surgery, she welcomed two children with her ex-husband Michael Halterman. She is now married to sports journalist Brian Lovvorn

Amy told PEOPLE in December 2023 that she and Tammy struggled with their weight from a young age

“Mom was always at work, so we had to learn how to cook and stuff for ourselves,” she said. “And at 10 and 11 you really couldn’t prepare healthy food and stuff.”

She continued that it became more difficult to control their weight when their grandmother, who helped care for them, died in 1999

“I started eating my feelings,” Amy told PEOPLE, while Tammy said, “[We] took it hard and turned to food for comfort.”

Amy and Tammy have chronicled their weight loss journey on the TLC show 1000-Lb. Sisters, which debuted in January 2020. Starring on the series helped the duo commit further to losing weight

“We were already trying to lose weight before the show even got a hold of us, so it was like the perfect opportunity,” Amy told PEOPLE in December 2023

Amy qualified for bariatric surgery in 2019

The sisters cut sugar from their diet and replaced it with low-carb, high-protein meals to aid in their weight loss journey. In 2019, Amy qualified for bariatric surgery while Tammy didn’t get approved for the weight-loss procedure.

“This was our final weigh in and I got approved so my surgery’s in two days, but Tammy didn’t get approved,” Amy said during the season 1 finale in 2020

Amy also shared that she felt Tammy was upset that the sisters were at different stages in their weight loss journeys

“Now that I’m approved and she’s not, I feel like she’s kind of upset with me about it. Most of the time I feel like I’m walking on eggshells around Tammy,” she said

Three years after undergoing bariatric surgery, Amy revealed she had lost 176 lbs. Her weight loss journey was partially motivated by her desire to become a mom

During a 2020 episode of 1000-Lb. Sisters,Amy revealed her initial 100 lb. weight loss after getting surgery

“I was thinking I would never possibly have a child because of my weight. Now it feels like it’s in reach,” she said. “When I hit my goal weight, it feels like it’s gonna happen.”

She welcomed her first child, son Gage, with her ex-husband Halterman in November 2020. Her second son, Glenn, was born in July 2022

Speaking with PEOPLE in December 2023, Amy said she tries to expose her sons to healthy foods

“Gage will eat Brussel sprouts. He’ll eat broccoli. He’ll eat cauliflower. He’ll eat all of that,” she said, while admitting “he prefers chicken nuggets and french fries!”

Amy struggled with her diet during pregnancy

Amy struggled with her diet during her first pregnancy in 2020 after getting pregnant too soon following her bariatric surgery. During a 2021 episode of 1000-Lb. Sisters, her family confronted her about her eating habits

“Amy, you done worked this hard to get the surgery. We need to get you back to where you need to be on your diet,” her brother Chris said. Tammy added, “Cause you know you ain’t been eating right, because of the baby.”

Amy admitted that she did have pregnancy cravings and wanted to be able to enjoy her pregnancy

“Y’all just don’t know how much I wanted this baby and I love it,” she said. “The whole point of me getting surgery was so that I could have me a baby.”

Amy said she was focusing on her mental health over weight loss in 2023

Amy split from Halterman in 2023 and told PEOPLE later that year her mental health was “the worst it’s ever been” post-divorce. She realized the severity of her mental health after a blow-up with sisters Amanda and Tammy, which ultimately led to her being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, depression and acute stress disorder. (Amy has faced troubles with the law over the years, including being arrested and pleading guilty to simple possession of marijuana and simple possession of mushrooms in late 2024 alongside Lovvorn.)

“It’s a relief to know that I’m not crazy. It was something totally different. I’m not just snapping because I’m snapping. I’m snapping because I’m bipolar,” she said. “I’ve said I’m not a therapy person — I said, ‘I will never go to therapy.’ But I went to therapy. And I’m happier.”

Amy told PEOPLE that she was focusing on her mental health over weight loss at the time, as you “can’t have weight loss without mental health.” She added that she tries to maintain her happiness by “talking to Tammy, and being with my kids and my family as much as possible.”
