Why the Central Valley needs more general surgeons — and who’s stepping in

Access to timely surgical care is an essential part of a healthy community. As the Central Valley continues to grow, so does the demand for experienced surgeons who can diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions. At the same time, physician workforce shortages across California have made access to specialty care increasingly challenging, underscoring the importance of expanding local surgical services

General surgery is one of medicine’s most comprehensive specialties, serving patients across a broad spectrum of conditions and procedures. From evaluating abdominal pain and repairing hernias to removing gallbladders, treating soft tissue masses, and performing lifesaving emergency procedures, general surgeons play a vital role in helping patients regain their health and quality of life

    General surgeon versatility

Unlike surgeons who focus on a single organ system or subspecialty, general surgeons are trained to diagnose and treat a diverse range of conditions involving the digestive tract, abdomen, soft tissues, skin, endocrine system, and other areas of the body. They perform both minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures and traditional open surgeries, selecting the approach that best meets each patient’s needs. Because of the breadth of their training, general surgeons are among the most versatile physicians in healthcare, caring for patients in both scheduled and emergency settings while collaborating closely with primary care providers and other specialists.

A general surgeon’s role extends well beyond the operating room. They evaluate patients before surgery, explain treatment options, perform surgical procedures, and provide follow-up care throughout recovery. This continuity allows patients to build a relationship with the same physician from diagnosis through postoperative care while ensuring treatment is coordinated across the patient’s broader healthcare team

    Evaluation and treatment

Patients are commonly referred to a general surgeon for conditions such as gallbladder disease, appendicitis, hernias, gastrointestinal disorders, skin and soft tissue masses, or other conditions that may require surgical evaluation. Persistent abdominal pain, a growing lump or mass, recurring hernias, or skin lesions that change in size or appearance are all examples of symptoms that should be evaluated by a healthcare provider, who may recommend consultation with a general surgeon. Early evaluation can help determine the most appropriate course of treatment, whether that involves surgery or another approach.

Access to experienced surgeons within the community not only gives patients more choice, but also helps reduce unnecessary delays in care when surgery is needed. Meeting that growing need is one reason Inspire Health Medical Group continues to expand access to specialty care throughout the Central Valley. One of the newest additions to its surgical team is Dr. Gerson Araujo, a board-certified general surgeon with more than a decade of experience providing comprehensive surgical care

    New addition to the team

Dr. Araujo treats a broad range of conditions, including gallbladder disease, hernias, gastrointestinal disorders, and soft tissue masses, using both minimally invasive laparoscopic and traditional open surgical techniques. Fluent in Spanish, he also helps improve access for many patients throughout the Valley’s diverse communities by communicating directly with them in their preferred language. In addition to caring for patients, he serves as physician faculty, helping educate and mentor the next generation of physicians and supporting the continued growth of high-quality healthcare in the Central Valley.

“Every surgery—whether routine or complex—has the potential to change someone’s life,” says Dr. Araujo. “My goal is to provide patients with timely access to high-quality surgical care close to home while treating every individual with compassion and respect.”

As healthcare needs continue to evolve across the Central Valley, expanding access to experienced general surgeons remains an important investment in the region’s health. Through physicians like Dr. Araujo, Inspire Health Medical Group is helping ensure more patients have access to coordinated, high-quality surgical care close to where they live and work. Strengthening the local surgical workforce not only increases patient choice today but also helps build a healthier, more resilient community for years to come.
