Why Can’t Our Gaming Handhelds Also Be Our Work PCs?

Today’s handheld PCs are much more so mobile gaming devices than personal computers. Acer’s latest concept device is epitomizing that much-memed Old El Paso taco commercial by asking, “¿Por qué no los dos?”

Debuting at IFA 2026, the Project DualPlay Mini is essentially a broken-down version of the existing Acer Predator Atlas 8, but with a keyboard shoved in for good measure. In its normal state, the DualPlay Mini acts like any other handheld, but by flipping the keyboard out and swiveling it, you now have a tiny, 8-inch pseudo laptop you can use to game or—somehow—work on

We’ve seen plenty of handhelds from boutique makers that slap a keyboard to the bottom of the chassis. Take the OneXPlayer 3, another Intel-based handheld announced this year with a magnetic, low-profile keyboard that can turn the handheld into a backup PC in a pinch. But let’s be honest, do you actually think you’ll enjoy typing on a cramped keyboard like that? I’ve tried it myself on off-kilter China-made handhelds like the Abyxlute 3D One, and the experience wasn’t exactly one I’d like to repeat.

Project DualPlay Mini is slightly different, with a full backlit physical keyboard in its laptop mode. Since the keyboard flips down and then swivels out, you have a more stable base from which to type. Ostensibly, it could also be a way to play first-person shooters with the traditional WASD and mouse combo, but I can’t imagine anybody would actually want to try to bunny hop with this keyboard unless you have spider legs for fingers

I also can’t say whether it actually looks comfortable to play in either handheld or laptop mode. Those jutting thumbsticks stuffed into the middle of what looks like a small plastic volcano are especially strange to look at and may be even stranger to play with

The new concept reminds me of Acer’s previous 2024 IFA concept, the Dual Play laptop. That laptop included a full gamepad stuffed into the area surrounding the trackpad, as if your big problem with massive desktop replacement gaming laptops was the lack of a controller. But as somebody who often travels with both a handheld and a laptop in my carry-on, I wonder if I couldn’t somehow combine the two

Gizmodo is on the ground in Berlin all week bringing you everything you need to know about the tech unveiled at IFA 2026. You can follow our IFA 2026 live blog here and find all our coverage here.
