If weight is the main way you are judging your fitness, it can make progress easy to miss. You can get stronger, have more stamina, and notice that your workouts feel easier without seeing much change on the scale. After all, two people can weigh the same but have very different amounts of muscle and fat. So what actually gives us a better sense of how fit someone is?

In a recent study of more than 2,600 adults, researchers looked at how muscle, fat, and body weight each related to cardiorespiratory fitness. Here’s what they found

    About the study

The researchers used health data from 2,647 adults in the Framingham Heart Study, a long-running project that tracks health in the town of Framingham, Massachusetts. About half of the participants were women (53%), and the average age was 54

First, participants had DEXA scans, which estimated how much of their weight came from fat, lean tissue, and bone. Researchers then compared those measurements to exercise performance and physical fitness

One of the main measures of fitness was peak oxygen uptake, which tells researchers how much oxygen the body can use during exercise. It’s closely related to VO2 max, a common measure of cardiorespiratory fitness

The researchers were especially interested in how these measurements played out among people with obesity, since body weight can make some of these standard fitness measurements hard to interpret

More muscle was linked to better fitness

Muscle stood out from the other body measurements

People with more lean mass tended to have better cardiorespiratory fitness, and lean mass was the strongest body-composition predictor of fitness the researchers found. Along with age and height, it explained about 44% to 48% of the differences in peak oxygen uptake between participants

The researchers also compared fitness in relation to total body weight. By that measure, people with metabolically healthy obesity appeared less fit than metabolically healthy people without obesity. But when fitness was measured in relation to lean mass instead, that difference disappeared

Imagine two people who both weigh 160 pounds. One might have considerably more muscle than the other, meaning their ability to run, climb stairs, carry groceries, or keep up during a workout could look very different. Even though these people see the exact same number on the scale, their physical fitness may not be the same. The study showed that this all depends on each individual’s different percentages of fat, muscle, and bone

Why muscle matters for physical capacity

Muscle isn’t just about how strong you look or how much you can lift. It’s the active tissue that helps your body move and convert oxygen to energy while exercising

This helps explain why lean mass was so closely connected with cardiorespiratory fitness in this study. More muscle means more tissue to help with movement and oxygen processing

This doesn’t mean body weight or body fat irrelevant to health, or that gaining muscle guarantees a higher VO2 max. The study found a relationship between lean mass and fitness, but didn’t find that one causes the other

Still, it’s another reason that weight and BMI shouldn’t be used as a shortcut to judge how fit someone is. These numbers can’t communicate the difference between muscle and fat

How to measure progress beyond the scale

If you’re working on your fitness, resistance training is the best way to build and maintain muscle. That could mean lifting weights, using resistance bands, or doing bodyweight exercises at home

You can also pay attention to what your body is capable of in daily life. See if you can walk up a hill without stopping, carry heavy groceries, climb several flights of stairs without getting winded, or recover quickly after a workout. These are all signs that your physical capacity is changing, even if your weight isn’t

If you use a fitness tracker, a VO2 max estimate gives you another number to watch over time. It isn’t a perfect measurement, but it’s useful for measuring fitness, alongside your strength, endurance, and how you feel during everyday activity

    The takeaway

In this group of adults, lean mass had a stronger relationship with cardiorespiratory fitness than body weight or BMI, proving that the number on the scale isn’t everything

Measurements like VO2 max and your functional endurance can give you a better sense of what your body can actually do. Chasing muscle as your goal, rather than shaving off a few pounds, is often a better, more sustainable goal for your long-term health
