For Mandy Trenter, summer used to be a season she dreaded. While many people look forward to holidays, long walks and spending time outdoors, Mandy remembers a family break that ended in tears and became the turning point that changed her life forever. Surrounded by beautiful countryside during a weekend away with her son, Mandy wanted to enjoy exploring together. Instead, she found herself constantly needing to stop and sit down because of the pain in her legs. When they returned to their caravan, she broke down. Seeing how much she was struggling, her son gently suggested she join Slimming World. “I’d reached the point where everyday life had become difficult,” Mandy said. At the time, Mandy was working as a school cleaner, but the physical demands of the job were becoming increasingly hard because of pain in her knees. She worried that if things carried on as they were, she might not be able to continue working. She was also taking three different medications to manage her blood pressure. Although walking through the doors of her Slimming World group for the first time felt daunting, Mandy says she was met with warmth, encouragement and understanding. “I cried when I stepped on the scales, but I never felt judged. I felt supported from the very beginning.” As she followed Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, Mandy discovered she could still enjoy satisfying meals while losing weight. “I love making my own meals from scratch and preparing fresh salads. I’ve found so many foods that I genuinely enjoy, and drinking more water has become a really important part of my day. It never felt like I was on a diet.” Over time, Mandy lost an incredible 10 stone, reducing her body weight by more than 50 per cent and earning Slimming World’s prestigious Club 50 award. The transformation has completely changed her life. “I walk for 40 minutes every single day, whatever the weather, simply because I can. That’s something I never thought I’d be able to say.” Summer, once something she wanted to hide from, has become something she embraces. “I started my journey wearing a size 20. Today I’m a size 10, and I love wearing dresses. I enjoy getting outside, going for walks and making the most of the sunshine. Summer is something I genuinely look forward to now.” Reaching target wasn’t the end of Mandy’s journey. She has continued attending her local Slimming World group, where she receives ongoing support to maintain her weight loss and, in turn, inspires others with her determination. Her commitment has now been recognised after being crowned Hawkslade Slimming World’s Diamond Member of the Year 2026. The award celebrates members who have maintained their target weight for at least a year while continuing to encourage and inspire those around them. Mandy said: “I honestly don’t think I would have maintained my weight loss without the support of group. Having people who understand, encourage you and celebrate every achievement makes such a difference. It’s become so much more than somewhere to get weighed – it’s a community.” Charlotte McNally, who runs the Hawkslade Slimming World group, said: “Although I wasn’t Mandy’s consultant at the start of her journey, I’ve had the privilege of supporting her through maintaining her incredible weight loss, and I’ve seen first-hand the commitment that takes. “People often think reaching target is the finish line, but maintaining a healthy weight is where lifelong habits are built. Mandy is an inspiration to everyone in our group. She’s warm, supportive and quietly determined, and she’s a wonderful example of how lasting change is possible with the right support. I’m absolutely delighted she’s been crowned our Diamond Member of the Year.” If Mandy’s story has inspired you, Charlotte’s Slimming World groups meet every Saturday at Hawkslade Community Centre, Aylesbury, at 8.30am and 10.00am.
