Alexandria man faces nearly 200 charges in gym parking lot theft spree

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (7News) —An Alexandriaman is facing nearly 200 charges after police said he targeted cars parked outside fitness centers across Fairfax Countyand neighboring jurisdictions over several months
Fairfax County police announced Monday that they have arrested 29-year-old Kumneger Ayalsew following a months-long investigation
Ayalsew is accused ofstealing wallets, credit cards and other valuables from unlocked cars since April

Police said he would then use the stolen cards to buy gift cards at nearby stores, often before victims realized their belongings were missing
The investigation led to 32 new charges, including:
- Nine counts of credit card larceny
- Nine counts of credit card fraud
- Five counts of identity theft
- Four counts of vehicle trespassing
- Two counts of petit larceny
- Two counts of money laundering
- One count of obtaining money by false pretenses
Police said the most recent Fairfax County thefts happened at fitness centers in Centreville, Reston and McLean between April 30 and June 23

Ayalsew was released on his own recognizance July 14 on the Fairfax County charges
However, he remains in custody at the Arlington County Detention Center on separate charges filed by the Falls Church Police Department
