Since GLP-1 drugs went mainstream in the early 2020s, there has been increasing attention on the potential side effects, predominantly gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, diarrhea and constipation

In the last three years, however, public interest in the association between GLP-1s and hair loss has increased markedly. This follows emerging data from pharmacovigilance studies and recent clinical trials linking alopecia with <a href="https://healthylife7.com/from-weight-loss-shakes-to-wellness-routines-slimfast-repositioned-with-new-look-and-npd/” title=”From weight loss shakes to wellness routines: SlimFast repositioned with new look and NPD”>weight loss drugs

For example, a recent study published in the British Medical Journal found the use of GLP-1 receptor agonists was associated with an increased risk of incident alopecia in adults with type 2 diabetes compared to two other diabetes drugs

A large systematic review published in Science Progressearlier this year also concluded that GLP-1s, particularly semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) are associated with an increased risk of hair loss

Now, new data from consulting company and end-to-end commercialization partner Ambileap shows Amazon searches for hair growth products have sky-rocketed, more than tripling since last year

“The growth trajectory for hair growth products is distinctly steep,” said Veronika Sianko, head of wellness and stimulation at Ambileap. “This explosive growth took root around Q3 of 2025 (which recorded 802,432 searches) and has continued to surge aggressively since then, climbing to 1.4 million searches in Q4 2025, 1.9 million in Q1 2026, and peaking at 2.5 million in Q2 2026

“Ultimately, the [data] highlights that despite having lower overall search volumes than giant categories like multivitamins, hair growth currently possesses the most aggressive forward momentum.”

As with searches, the number of hair growth claims on product packaging is growing, too. Data from NielsenIQ (NIQ) shows these claims have grown by 21% in the past year, making it one of the fastest rising claims in the beauty-from-within category

In fact, the data suggests hair, skin and nails is the largest health need opportunity within the category, with near universal household penetration. The segment also generated the highest absolute dollar sales among all need states tracked, Sherry Frey, vice president of total wellness at NIQ told delegates during a recent NutraIngredients webinar

TikTok Shop is a common platform for users to buy hair growth products, Frey added, coming in second place overall after vitamin and mineral supplements, with hair care growing by 80% compared to one year ago. Frey said this rise appears to be linked to GLP-1 consumption

“Increasingly, we’ve seen a lot of growth with GLP-1 consumers and hair growth products because of hair loss,” she said. “However, it’s not necessarily GLP-1 driven–it could be rapid weight loss or poor nutrition. There’s a variety of factors at play.”

Indeed, any form of rapid weight loss can cause temporary hair loss. Research suggests this is because rapid weight loss is a major stress event for the body, causing energy to be re-directed away from non-essential tasks. A lack of certain nutrients such as protein, iron and zinc can also lead to a lack of hair production and shedding

Hair loss can also be caused by a range of other factors, such as stress and aging. In addition, desire for hair growth products could be due to social media and beauty trends

Nevertheless, several brands link the growing demand for hair loss products to the growing number of consumers on GLP-1 drugs. For example, Aaron Hefter, founder and president of start-up Imaraïs Beauty, said the brand’s hero SKU is a scalp care product containing a blend of reishi, snow and chaga mushrooms, designed to boost blood circulation to the scalp

“Scalp care and hair regrowth is a huge category because of GLP-1s,” he said. “When you have a consumer so committed to aesthetics and injecting themselves daily with these peptides, and then they start losing their hair, there’s an automatic reaction. We’ve been in the space for five years and we’ve seen a huge spike over the last two years in our hair growth supplement and we don’t see any end in sight.”

Beyond mushrooms, biotin, thiamine, zinc and iron and vitamins B12 and C are common in hair growth supplements due to their ability to produce keratin, support the repair of hair tissue and fight cellular damage. Data from Ambileap shows these nutrients are often used in hair growth formulas alongside proteins such as collagen and amino acids, and botanicals such as rosemary, pumpkin seed and nettle root

However, Ambileap’s Sianko said products specifically designed for GLP-1 users rarely carry hair growth claims

“An analysis of GLP-1-supporting snacks and drinks launched in the US in 2025–2026 shows that most address muscle loss, digestive discomfort, dehydration, low energy and fatigue—hair health is rarely cited as a benefit,” she said. “We estimate that no more than 5% of GLP-1-focused products currently make hair-related claims.”

The picture is similar in Europe senior global insight manager for consumer health at Euromonitor, who said hair loss has increasing awareness as a side-effect of severe weight loss, but the depth of health products aiming hair loss claims at GLP-1 support audiences is at trace levels only to mid-2026

This disconnect is demonstrated in mainstream retail settings. For example, health, beauty and pharmacy retailer Boots has begun signposting consumers to products which can support consumers on their GLP-1 journey. Shelf barkers are being used to highlight issues such as skin changes, dry mouth, dehydration and bloating, pointing consumers towards products which may help alleen signposted

More specialized retailers, however, have begun to tap in to this emerging trend. Holland & Barrett’s online GLP-1 range features a range of healthy hair formulas, alongside protein, fiber and other products for digestion, muscle support, energy and hydration

Researchers first began researching the impact of GLP-1 drugs on hair loss less than a decade ago. As a result, there is a fairly limited research database exploring the link

The review by Gupta et al. included 24 studies which met the inclusion criteria. From these studies, the researchers noted that risk is most pronounced with semaglutide and tirzepatide, particularly at high doses

Patients taking weekly subcutaneous doses of less than 2 mg of semaglutide rarely reported hair loss. However, incidence reached 7% in those taking 50 mg daily. Incidence also nearly doubled—jumping from 2.5% to 5.3%—in those who incurred severe weight loss, i.e. more than 20% of their total body weight

The authors say this suggests the primary driver of hair loss is therefore unlikely to be drug toxicity but rather the secondary effects of rapid, substantial weight loss. Caloric restriction and nutritional deficiencies were also identified as a contributor, with women disproportionately affected, potentially due to higher rates of weight loss or increased reporting sensitivity

In fact, the researchers highlighted that there are currently no human studies suggesting GLP-1s have a directly harmful effect on hair follicles

The clinical trial by Tang et al.reached similar conclusions. The methodology differed from most previous studies, comparing GLP-1 receptor agonists with sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors (common diabetes medications) in type 2 diabetes patients

Overall, those on GLP-1 medications had a 37% higher risk of hair loss compared to those on SGLT-2 inhibitors and a 68% higher risk compared to those on DPP-4 inhibitors. However, after adjusting for patient differences, the absolute risk was low, with only around 6-7 people per 1,000 developing clinically recorded hair loss

In addition, the researchers found that the risk was almost exclusively tied to non-scarring varieties of alopecia, primarily telogen effluvium (TE), which began during the first year of treatment

TE occurs when a systemic shock prematurely flips a large number of follicles from the growth phase (anagen) into a resting phase (telogen), leading to diffuse shedding months later. This typically means that hair growth will return once the body has overcome the stress of rapid weight loss

Similarly to the review, the researchers of the BMJstudy concluded that hair loss is therefore likely induced by rapid weight loss rather than the drug itself

“The most likely mechanism underlying the observed association between GLP-1 receptor agonist use and alopecia relates to weight loss and reduced caloric intake following treatment initiation,” they wrote. “Caloric restriction may also contribute to physiological stress and micronutrient deficiencies (for example, iron, zinc, biotin), which can disrupt the hair growth cycle. This aligns with the predominance of non-scarring alopecia observed in our study and suggests that hair loss may reflect downstream effects of metabolic change rather than a direct drug effect.”

Tang et al.said these findings may have important clinical implications, particularly if they provide reassurance to GLP-1 users that hair loss is a potential, but not universal, consequence of weight loss drugs. And when it does occur, it is likely to be a temporary side effect rather than a permanent outcome

“Further studies are needed to clarify underlying mechanisms, assess clinical severity and reversibility, and identify patients who may be at higher risk,” they concluded
