The rapid adoption of GLP-1 drugs in India is beginning to create a new healthcare-services industry around the blockbuster medicines, as companies look beyond selling weight-loss drugs to build businesses spanning diagnostics, doctor consultations, nutrition, patient monitoring and long-term lifestyle management
With drugs such as Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro and Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Ozempic generating growing interest among Indian patients, healthcare ventures are betting that the commercial opportunity will extend beyond pharmaceutical manufacturers to companies that can manage patients before, during and after treatment
One such bet is MetaGO, a metabolic health platform founded by members of the team behind medical crowdfunding platform Ketto, including Varun Sheth and actor-entrepreneur Kunal Kapoor. The company is building a subscription-led model around metabolic healthcare and has set an internal target of reaching 100,000 patients within the next three years
MetaGO says more than 1,000 patients have approached the platform so far, while over 3,000 people are at various stages of assessment, enrolment or treatment
“Our goal is to reach 100,000 patients within 36 months. That is the internal target we have set for ourselves,” the founders told Moneycontrol
The emergence of such businesses illustrates how the GLP-1 boom is beginning to create an ecosystem around the drugs themselves. Rather than manufacturing the medicines, these companies are looking at areas such as patient acquisition, diagnostics, clinical supervision, management of side effects and adherence to treatment
For MetaGO, the proposition is to provide those services through a single platform rather than operate primarily as a seller of GLP-1 medicines
“We are not a GLP-1 company. We are a metabolic health company. We are not even a weight-loss company,” Sheth said
Building around the GLP-1 boom
MetaGO typically enrols patients in six- or 12-month programmes covering consultations, clinical monitoring and health coaching. Its clinical care and coaching plans start at around Rs 24,000 annually, while medicines are charged separately depending on what doctors prescribe
The company has also tied up with Bajaj Finance to provide financing options for patients
Patients undergo blood tests and metabolic assessments covering more than 35 biomarkers before being evaluated by endocrinologists, diabetologists or internal medicine specialists. Doctors then determine whether GLP-1 therapy is appropriate
Patients for whom the medicines are prescribed can receive drugs such as Mounjaro, Ozempic, Wegovy or Rybelsus at home, alongside access to doctors, nutritionists and health coaches. The programme includes monthly reviews and quarterly blood tests, according to the company
One of the biggest business opportunities MetaGO sees is not merely getting patients onto GLP-1 drugs, but keeping them on medically prescribed treatment
The founders cited market data indicating that 40-45 percent of patients discontinue treatment within the first three months. MetaGO claims its model, which combines medical supervision with regular coaching, has resulted in retention rates of 85-90 percent
“Today, doctors in India generally diagnose and prescribe, and then the responsibility for adherence is left to the patient,” the founders said. “With GLP-1, adherence is extremely important.”
Patients can also communicate with coaches through WhatsApp and share information on meals, sleep and other health parameters. MetaGO has built an artificial intelligence-based recommendation engine to support coaches with personalised guidance, while retaining doctors and other healthcare professionals at the centre of clinical care
The idea for the venture emerged from a very different healthcare business
Funding health emergencies to preventive care
Kapoor, Sheth and their colleagues spent more than a decade building Ketto, where they encountered patients crowdfunding expensive treatments for serious heart, kidney, liver and other diseases. The founders said they repeatedly saw metabolic conditions such as diabetes and obesity underlying illnesses that eventually required expensive treatment
“The starting point was: what if we went to the beginning of the story and created a metabolic health company that could help prevent what happens 15 years later?” Kapoor said
India’s large population of people living with diabetes, obesity and pre-diabetes makes that a potentially large market. At the same time, the arrival of newer GLP-1 therapies is changing how patients and healthcare providers approach weight management and metabolic disease
“Weight loss is picking up. Every month there seems to be new data emerging from ongoing trials of both Mounjaro and Ozempic. The benefits are expanding,” Sheth said, pointing to research involving cardiovascular disease, fatty liver disease and other metabolic conditions
MetaGO maintains that medication is only one component of its model and that the longer-term objective is to combine medical treatment with behavioural change
“Our aim is to help people make lifestyle changes so that over time they become less dependent on medication and more dependent on their own behavioural changes,” Kapoor said
The company is now adding doctors, health coaches and technology infrastructure as it prepares to scale
