Beshear says Senate should demand more evidence on Mitch McConnell’s <a href="https://healthylife7.com/mental-health-effects-of-glp/” title=”Mental Health Effects of GLP”>health

    Updated July 28, 2026, 2:17 p.m. ET

Gov. Andy Beshear urged the U.S. Senate to demand more information about Sen. Mitch McConnell’s health status, after the 84-year-old said in a statement July 27 he is undergoing physical therapy following his hospitalization

“I wish him well. I hope his health is improving,” Beshear said during a July 28 news conference. “But if he can have a 17-minute conversation with his protege, he can call into your news stations for free. All we’re asking is a little bit of proof.”

In his recent statement, McConnell said he is “working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors’ orders.” The former Republican majority leader was initially hospitalized June 14, for treatment of injuries from a fall in his Washington, D.C. residence

Information about the senator’s health has been limited during his hospitalization, leading to calls for transparency even from his congressional colleagues on both sides of the aisle, including Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri and Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York

During the July 28 news conference, Beshear said McConnell needed to provide more clarity as a matter of protocol for someone in his political position

“I get that everybody wants a certain level of privacy,” he said. “When you run for these jobs, you know you’re giving some of that up. We’ve seen rampant speculation on social media and elsewhere. It can all be fully avoided and it’s all within Sen. McConnell’s power. But because he won’t do that, the fact is we don’t know.”

Beshear also again called on members of Congress to urge the senator to provide more information after sending a letter Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-South Dakota, asking him to investigate McConnell’s condition July 27

“That means the Senate, if he won’t provide more evidence, needs to step in and demand it,” he said. “The only way a vacancy is created under law is either a resignation, a death or a vote from the Senate itself. Until then, unless Sen. McConnell comes forward and shows that [evidence], Kentuckians aren’t being represented.”

McConnell is not running for an eighth term in the Senate and is due to leave office in January 2027. His office has provided two photos of him with his wife, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, since his most recent hospitalization, though McConnell has not been seen publicly or taken any media interviews since then. He has since been moved to a rehabilitation facility to continue his recovery, officials said

During the July 28 news conference, Beshear said a “short video” from McConnell would have prevented further speculation about his condition

“That’s the least you can do for your constituents out there,” the governor said. “All we see our photographs and official statements. And some come from his staff. Just give us a little assurance, and if everything’s okay, everybody can move on.”
