The St. Louis Blues have released a statement sharing the hospitalization of defense prospect Matthew Mayich, who collapsed during off-season workouts with Arizona State University. Mayich was preparing for his first season with the Sun Devils after transferring from New York’s Clarkson University last season. Mayich, 21, was participating in outdoor exercises during a team-sanctioned activity when he collapsed, per local NBC station 12News.kouts, describing them as cadence-driven, military-style calisthenics to Mike McMahon of College Hockey Insider. Regardless of the nature of the workout, all focus will currently be on supporting Mayich and his family as he continues to recover
The sophomore defender was set for a focal role on the Arizona State blue line after finding his footing with Clarkson. He scored seven goals, 15 points, and a plus-13 in 34 games of his freshman season – after becoming one of the first CHL players to commit to college in 2025. Mayich had spent the prior four seasons with the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s, where he proved to be an effective, depth defender. Mayich scored 22 points in 64 games of his first draft-eligible season in 2022-23, leading the Blues to select the mobile, two-way defender in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft. He stuck in the OHL for two more seasons – appearing in 66 games in both years and scoring 24 and 42 points respectively.
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Mayich shines as a capable and fundamental one-on-one defender. His ability to use his stick to direct opponents and force turnovers has underlined his game in previous seasons
