Among the bones of a former hardwood flooring center with a dusty back lot on Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Jonathan Uphoff had a vision

Uphoff, a Solana Beach local and 27-year veteran of the fitness and wellness industry, did the heavy lifting and the big dreaming to transform the unassuming space into Bluprint Wellness, a luxury longevity and performance center. Open since February, Bluprint offers advanced one-on-one personal training with first-of-its-kind AI-driven equipment, functional medicine with an on-site naturopathic doctor, and recovery like infrared saunas, cryotherapy and cold plunge tubs. That back lot with an underutilized ocean view became a resort-like exercise and event lawn to inspire community.

While the wellness space can often feel very fragmented, in Uphoff’s vision, all of those pieces fit together in one place to “elevate health, optimize performance and support longevity.”

“No one else is doing anything close to what we’re doing here,” Uphoff said

Membership at the luxury center is offered only by application and the private personal training sessions are meant to feel intimate and exclusive. The trainer is focused solely on their client and results are guaranteed as long as members show up and do the work. Bluprint’s modern gym features the first allocation in the country of Technogym Biostrength equipment made in Italy. Members use a wristband to log in to each machine and with the tech, clients’ can measure body composition and track progress, getting valuable real-time data. At the club, members also have access to personalized consultations and plans from licensed naturopathic doctor Dr. Lain Lye, all the recovery modalities and special events and workshops.

“The goal is really to be one integral space for all your wellness needs, for anyone who is willing to invest in their health,” Uphoff said

Among the clientele activating Bluprint this summer have been top jockeys from the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, including Juan Hernandez, Umberto Vispoli, veteran Mike Smith and up-and-comer Diego Herrera

Earlier this month, Hernandez, who leads with 30 wins at Del Mar this season, was getting in a workout and recovery session before jumping on a plane to London to race in York and jetting back the next day to ride in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar

His workouts focus on leg strength and keeping his weight stable and light, and what he liked best about Bluprint was the recovery options—it was his first time in a cold plunge, which he admits was a little challenging at first. The day before a race, he has enjoyed using the infrared sauna to help drop a little weight and after a workout he likes to do cryotherapy

“I like the recovery because I feel fresh to do my races,” Hernandez said. “My muscles feel relaxed to go win a race.”

It took Uohoff about three and a half years to build Bluprint, drawing on his many years of experience as an athlete, personal trainer and entrepreneur. A native of El Paso, Texas, he started his first successful wellness business at 23 years old, ran his own studios in Texas and Florida, and was a corporate athletic director before moving to San Diego in 2011. He started his own personal training studio in Solana Beach and was part of a larger fitness studio in Sorrento Valley

After an unexpected exit from his last business, he was searching for what he would do next

“I started with just dreaming big and doing something different and doing it better,” he said. “I wasn’t going to let anything stop me: This is it, this is going to be my legacy.”

He said he fought tooth and nail working with the landlord of the Lomas Santa Fe space, a space he first scouted 10 years ago. He had a rendering in mind and admittedly went a little crazy with the design, but he knew he wanted it to be something really special, from the custom gym that opens out into the grassy lawn and outdoor lounge to the spa-like setting of the infrared saunas and roomy cold plunge tubs

“The equipment is the star of the show,” he said of the advanced Technogym equipment with its “game-changing” technology. He is proud to have gone up against leaders in the fitness industry to get the equipment over the last three years, sharing his vision with the company in Italy to win the chance to be the first in America to feature it. In March, Technogym came out to bless the space: “They loved everything,” Uphoff said of the incredibly meaningful moment after so much hard work went into making his vision of a cohesive wellness destination a reality.

Uphoff said Bluprint wouldn’t have been possible without Dr. Lye, whom he hired on the spot the first time they met and has become like family. A licensed naturopathic doctor, she leads the functional medicine part of the program, using advanced diagnostics to create individualized programs for members. Lye specializes in hormone optimization, IV nutrient therapy, metabolic health, and preventive and precision-based medicine—she can show what the human body is capable of when all of the internal components are balanced and optimized, Uphoff said.

Shortly before opening Bluprint, he also brought in Karen Cook as the creative director —she has been invaluable in helping to shape the member experience on the community side, and to get their name out there

“I could not be more thrilled seeing how we’ve built this incredible facility and seeing how this place has come to life,” Uphoff said
