Bumrah clears the COE’s fitness tests and is available for both Sri Lanka Tests

India’s seam stocks were down to Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and an uncapped Punjab quick. The clearance changes the shape of the Galle Test

Jasprit Bumrah has come through the fitness work set for him by the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and is available for both Tests in Sri Lanka, which settles the one question hanging over an India squad that was picked with his name carrying an asterisk

The knee that cost him a Lord’s decider

Bumrah took an impact injury to his left knee while fielding in the second ODI against England in Cardiff. The reactive swelling that followed kept him out of the series decider at Lord’s on 19 July, a match England won by 27 runs after posting 387 for 3, and it was still being managed when the selectors sat down to pick the red-ball squad. They named him anyway, subject to fitness, which is the polite way of saying the team had no intention of touring without him if there was a way around it.

“Jasprit Bumrah has recovered from his impact injury. He has cleared the fitness tests mandated by the COE,” a BCCIle for both matches. Sai Sudharsan was named on the same conditional basis

An attack that could not afford another absentee

The relief has less to do with Bumrah’s ceiling than with what sits behind him. Akash Deep is still working back from the lower-back stress injury that ended his IPL season and is targeting the Duleep Trophy in September, so he was never in this conversation. Harshit Rana tore a hamstring during the England T20Is. Nitish Kumar Reddy is out with a quadriceps problem. That leaves Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and the uncapped Punjab quick Gurnoor Brar as the rest of the seam group, on surfaces where the fast bowlers will spend long spells watching spin work from the other end.

Galle rarely rewards pace for its own sake. What it does reward is a bowler who can produce something from nothing on the fourth afternoon, when the ball is soft and the pitch has stopped helping anyone. That has been Bumrah’s function in Asia for years

    Galle first, without Washington Sundar

India’s other injury has already reshaped the spin department. Washington Sundar’s hamstring keeps him out, and it was that absence which opened the door for Saransh Jain, the Madhya Pradesh off-spinner who earns a maiden call-up at 33 after years of steady domestic returns and a strong India A trip to Sri Lanka, where he made an unbeaten 70 and took six wickets in an innings in the second four-day game. Ravindra Jadeja is back, Kuldeep Yadav travels, and left-arm spinner Manav Suthar gives Shubman Gill a fourth slow-bowling option.

Gill leads, with KL Rahul as his deputy. Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel are the two wicketkeepers in the party, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal fill out the batting

Two Tests worth more than two Tests

The first Test starts at Galle on 15 August, the second in Colombo on 23 August. Neither is a marquee fixture on paper, and both carry weight India would rather not be carrying, because this World Test Championship cycle has gone badly. Four wins, four defeats and a draw from nine Tests has left them fifth, well adrift of an Australia side that has won seven of eight. The margin for a drawn series in Sri Lanka does not really exist

Then comes New Zealand, with Tests in Wellington from 19 November and Christchurch from 27 November, on pitches that will ask an entirely different set of questions. Two results in Sri Lanka would make that tour a chance to climb. One result, or none, and it becomes a salvage job. Having the best bowler of his generation on the plane does not decide any of that on its own. It does mean the next fortnight can be spent arguing about selection rather than about who replaces him
