ECU Health is hosting a hot car safety event to highlight the dangers of leaving children, older adults and pets unattended in vehicles

The event, organized by ECU Health’s Eastern Carolina Injury Prevention Program, will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 30, in the Kohl’s parking lot at 3501 Galleria Drive in Greenville

Organizers will demonstrate how quickly temperatures can rise inside a parked vehicle using temperature gauges and even roast s’mores inside a car to illustrate the extreme heat that can build up in a short amount of time

According to ECU Health, a child’s body heats up three to five times faster than an adult’s, making it especially dangerous to leave children alone in a vehicle, even for a short time

Injury prevention experts will also share tips to help parents and caregivers remember to check the back seat before leaving their vehicles

The event is being hosted in partnership with Martin-Pitt Partnership for Children, Safe Kids Pitt County and the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program
