What Happened?
Eli Lilly (LLY) stock is in the spotlight today after the company said it will file for approval of its next-generation obesity drug, retatrutide, in Q1 of 2027
This pushes back an earlier plan to submit as soon as this year. Lilly says it simply needs more time to gather and verify the manufacturing and quality-control data regulators require. The delay comes despite strong news on the science side
Retatrutide just succeeded in two more late-stage trials, bringing its total to five positive Phase 3 studies. In one trial, adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes lost up to an average of 20.8% of their body weight, or nearly 50 pounds, over 80 weeks
That’s a notable result since this group typically struggles to lose weight. In a second trial, adults with severe obesity and existing heart disease lost up to 22.6% of their weight, or 55.8 pounds, over the same period
The drug also meaningfully improved certain heart disease risk factors in that group. Side effects stayed consistent with earlier studies and with other drugs in this class, mainly diarrhea, nausea, and constipation
Based on this data, Lilly believes it now has what it needs to seek global approval for retatrutide covering obesity, knee osteoarthritis pain, and obstructive sleep apnea
Analysts at TD Cowen estimate retatrutide could bring in $3.8 billion in sales by 2030
The drug is nicknamed “triple G” because it targets three hormones, GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon, rather than just one or two like existing treatments such as Zepbound or Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy
Adding to the backdrop,Novo Nordisk said today it’s seeking a court injunction to immediately block certain Eli Lilly ads for its obesity and diabetes drugs
Novo argues the ads mislead consumers by comparing high doses of Lilly’s Zepbound and Mounjaro against lower doses of Novo’s products
Lilly has denied wrongdoing and says it will defend its advertising
