At SightMD Pennsylvania, we are proud to recognize July as Dry Eye Awareness Month — a time dedicated to raising awareness about one of the most common and often overlooked eye conditions affecting millions of Americans every year

Whether you’re experiencing occasional discomfort or dealing with chronic symptoms, understanding dry eye is the first step toward relief and long-term eye health

    What Is dry eye?

Dry eye syndrome, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca, occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears or when the quality of your tears is poor, causing them to evaporate too quickly. Tears are essential for keeping the surface of your eyes smooth, clear, and comfortable. They provide lubrication, reduce the risk of eye infection, and wash away foreign matter

When the tear film becomes unstable or insufficient, the result is often a gritty, burning, or stinging sensation that can interfere with daily life. Left untreated, dry eye can lead to inflammation, corneal damage, or even vision loss in severe cases

    Common symptoms of dry eye

Dry eye symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may include:

    • A sensation of dryness, burning, or stinging in the eyes

    • Feeling like there is something in your eye (foreign body sensation)

    • Redness or irritation, especially in windy or dry environments

    • Blurred vision, especially after long periods of focus

    • Watery eyes (a reflex response to dryness)

    • Difficulty wearing contact lenses

    • Eye fatigue, especially when reading or using digital devices

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms on a regular basis, it’s important not to ignore them. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing the progression of dry eye disease and preserving clear, comfortable vision

    What causes dry eye?

Dry eye can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

    • Aging: Tear production tends to decrease with age, especially after age 50

    • Environmental conditions: Exposure to wind, smoke, dry air, or air conditioning

    • Prolonged screen use: Staring at screens can reduce blink rate, leading to evaporation

    • Contact lens wear: Can reduce tear production and impact tear film stability

    • Hormonal changes: Particularly in women during pregnancy, menopause, or while on certain birth control pills

    • Medical conditions: Such as autoimmune disorders (like Sjogren’s syndrome), diabetes, or thyroid conditions

    • Medications: Including antihistamines, decongestants, antidepressants, and blood pressure medications

    • Eye surgery: Procedures like LASIK can temporarily or permanently affect tear production

    Tips for managing dry eye

Fortunately, there are many ways to manage dry eye symptoms and support overall eye comfort. Here are some simple, effective strategies:

    1. Use artificial tears or lubricating eye drops: Over-the-counter lubricating eye drops can provide immediate relief. For chronic cases, preservative-free formulations are often recommended. Your eye doctor can help you choose the best type for your needs

    2. Blink regularly and fully: When using computers, smartphones, or reading for extended periods, we tend to blink less often. Make a conscious effort to blink fully and frequently to help spread tears evenly across the surface of your eyes

    3. Wear sunglasses outdoors: Protecting your eyes from sun, wind, and dust can reduce tear evaporation. Look for wraparound sunglasses or those with side shields for extra protection

    4. Take frequent breaks from screens: Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. This helps reduce digital eye strain and supports healthy blinking

    5. Stay hydrated and adjust your environment: Drink plenty of water throughout the day and use a humidifier to maintain moisture in the air, especially in air-conditioned or heated spaces

    6. Consult an eye care specialist: If your symptoms persist despite at-home care, don’t wait — talk to an ophthalmologist or optometrist at SightMD Pennsylvania. We offer advanced diagnostic tools and a range of treatments tailored to your specific condition, including:

    • Prescription eye drops that increase tear production or reduce inflammation

    • Punctal plugs to block tear drainage and keep eyes moist longer

    • In-office procedures like LipiFlow to treat Meibomian gland dysfunction

    • Nutritional recommendations, such as omega-3 fatty acid supplements

The importance of regular eye exams

Dry eye isn’t just a matter of comfort — it can have a significant impact on your visual clarity and quality of life. In some cases, chronic dry eye can cause damage to the corneal surface, increasing the risk of infection or even scarring

That’s why regular comprehensive eye exams are so important. Our experienced doctors at SightMD Pennsylvania can detect the early signs of dry eye and other vision conditions, even before noticeable symptoms arise. Early intervention not only improves comfort but also helps prevent potential long-term damage to your eyes
