Emory nursing professor Jill Hamilton published book on researching health-shaping social factors
September 1, 2026

Health begins long before a person enters a doctor’s office.
In her latest book,Jill Hamilton, PhD, MRPL, RN, FAAN, FADLN, professor at Emory University’s Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, shows how researchers can use interviews, observations, and personal stories to better understand the real-world experiences that shape health outcomes and contribute to disparities across communities
The book, “Using Qualitative Methods for Social Determinants of Health Research,” is a guide for conducting qualitative research focused on the social, economic, environmental and cultural conditions that can affect health outcomes.
Drawing on more than 20 years of research experience, Hamilton offers step-by-step guidance for every stage of the research process, from planning a study and collecting data to analyzing findings and sharing results. While many research texts explain qualitative methods broadly, Hamilton’s book focuses on applying these approaches to help researchers gain a deeper understanding of people’s lived experiences and the barriers they face in achieving good health
The book also offers practical strategies for integrating social determinants of health into new and existing research projects and adapting research-informed interventions to meet the needs of diverse populations. It is intended for use by researchers, educators and students across nursing, public health, medicine, theology, and related fields
The author of two previous books on social determinants of health, Hamilton has also published on topics related to culture, social support, religiosity, spirituality, and quality of life among African Americans with life-threatening illness. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and the Academy of Diversity Leaders in Nursing and a recipient of the Oncology Nursing Society’s Award for Excellence in Cancer Education
