Everyday Habits Key to Heart Health, Not Just Supplements

Everyday Habits Key to Heart Health, Not Just Supplements
Experts reveal lifestyle habits that truly enhance heart health, emphasising exercise, nutrition, sleep, and stress management over supplements.

The market is saturated with dietary supplements promising heart health benefits, ranging from omega-3 capsules to herbal formulations. However, leading cardiology experts insist these products should not replace fundamental lifestyle habits essential for long-term cardiovascular health

Dr Akhil K Rustagi, Senior Director and Head of Cardiology at ShardaCare Healthcity, expressed that while supplements can address specific deficiencies or medical issues, they often create a false sense of security. He noted that people frequently treat supplements as adequate substitutes for healthy lifestyle choices, which are the foundation of true heart health

“If you consult any pharmacy or browse online for heart health advice, it may appear that the solution lies in pill form. However, genuine long-term cardiovascular well-being arises from consistent daily habits rather than relying on quick fixes,” Dr Rustagi commented

One of the cornerstones of heart health is regular physical activity. According to Dr Rustagi, many misunderstand the role of exercise, believing it is primarily about weight loss. He stated that exercise is vital to improving blood circulation, reducing blood pressure, enhancing insulin sensitivity, and promoting healthy cholesterol levels

Nutrition plays an equally pivotal role in cardiovascular health. Dr Rustagi explained, “Heart health isn’t determined by isolated meals but by your overall eating habits. A balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and healthy fats is necessary for cardiovascular wellness. Conversely, high consumption of ultra-processed foods and sugary drinks heightens the risk of serious health conditions like hypertension and metabolic syndrome.”

Sleep can often be overlooked but is crucial for vascular health. The cardiologist remarked, “Sleep is sometimes undervalued, yet it significantly influences heart health. Poor sleep quality can lead to hypertension, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and a higher risk of heart attacks.” He suggested that consistency in sleep patterns can promote better heart health

Dr Rustagi further discussed the dangers of unmanaged stress, which can exacerbate blood pressure and lead to detrimental lifestyle choices. He advocated stress-reducing techniques like mindfulness practices and regular social support to mitigate its negative effects on cardiovascular health

Preventive healthcare is another vital aspect; many cardiovascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol, often lie undetected until serious complications arise. Dr Rustagi pointed out that regular health screenings and check-ups can facilitate early detection and intervention

He concluded by emphasising that consistency is essential for heart health. Though supplements may have a purpose in specific instances, they lack the robust evidence that supports the efficacy of healthy lifestyle habits maintained over months and years. Making everyday choices that bolster overall well-being is paramount for heart protection. Dr Rustagi summarised, “The best defence for your heart lies in the daily decisions you make, rather than the quick-fix solutions that may seem appealing.”

This information serves as a reminder that true heart health is a long-term commitment, reliant on daily choices that encompass exercise, nutrition, good sleep, and effective stress management
