W.Va. (WTAP) – Officials are urging people in the affected area to limit time outdoors as smoke from a warehouse fire continues to hang over the community

Health experts say smoke can irritate anyone’s lungs, but older adults and people with asthma, COPD, or other breathing problems face the highest risk. Anyone who notices sudden shortness of breath—especially after being outside—should seek help immediately. If someone is struggling to breathe, call 911

Experts recommend staying inside as much as possible and keeping windows and doors closed. If you have air conditioning, run it to keep indoor air circulating

    Residents are also encouraged to:

    • Check and replace HVAC filters if needed, making sure filters are clean
    • Use portable air purifiers if available
    • Make a DIY air filter using a box fan and an air filter to help clean the air in a room

To keep indoor air as clean as possible, officials advise cutting down on activities that create additional smoke or particles, including:

    • Smoking or vaping
    • Cooking that produces smoke
    • Burning candles

If you must go outdoors, a properly fitted N95 maskis recommended for better filtration. Cloth masks may offer limited help, but N95s are considered the better option during smoky conditions

Officials say the guidance remains important as long as smoke is present, even after the fire is out, because lingering smoke can still impact air quality. Residents in the immediate area are still being asked to stay clear and limit exposure until conditions improve
