Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Public health officials with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare have reported the first heat-related deaths of 2026

Three Idahoans, all 55 or older, died last week as temperatures reached the 90s. The deaths occurred in different parts of southern Idaho

Anyone can experience a heat-related illness, but the risk is higher for young children; adults 50 and older; people who are overweight or have certain medical conditions; and those who work or exercise outdoors

Heat exhaustion can occur before a more serious medical emergency. Symptoms may include tiredness, weakness, irritability, thirst, headache, nausea, muscle cramps, and cold, clammy skin

If someone shows signs of heat exhaustion, move them to a cool place, loosen their clothing and help lower their body temperature with cool, wet cloths or a cool bath. Have them sip cool water frequently

Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Warning signs include a high body temperature, hot or reddened skin, confusion, seizures, dizziness, nausea or fainting. Call 911 if someone may be experiencing heatstroke. While waiting for help, move them to a cooler area and begin cooling them with water, wet cloths, ice packs and a fan. Do not give them anything to drink

With temperatures expected to remain in the 90s in the coming weeks, officials urge Idahoans to take steps to prevent heat-related illnesses

    • Plan strenuous outdoor work, exercise and errands for early morning or later in the evening.
    • Choose light, breathable clothing and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded spaces.
    • Drink water regularly — before you feel thirsty. For moderate activity lasting under two hours, aim for about a cup every 15 to 20 minutes.
    • Skip alcohol and limit heavily caffeinated or sugary drinks, which can contribute to dehydration.
    • Check on children, older adults, neighbors and coworkers who may be more vulnerable in extreme heat.
    • Never leave a child or pet inside a parked vehicle, even for a short time.
    • Keep an eye on heat forecasts and alerts, particularly before working or recreating outdoors.
